Surrounded by music and musicians since birth, PIA began to sing on stage at age nine when she toured with the Native American philosopher and eco-warrior, Sun Bear.
From that time, inspired by chanting and alternative lifestyle, she began a search for truth and music that would inspire her soul, culminating in entering into a Vaishnava monastery in France where she began her education in Mantra and devotion to the Lord.Receiving hari nama initiation from His Holiness Sivarama Swami in 1988, Pia’s name was changed by His Holiness to Gaurangi-devi dasi, meaning ‘Servant of The Beautiful, Golden-Complexioned Radha (the beloved of Lord Krishna)’Haridas Ganguli, the revered singer, became Pia’s teacher/guruji in 1991, opening up the world of raga, and rasa - in regard to music.Pia has toured the globe performing in groups, both traditional and contemporary, and as a solo artist. Her first solo recording, Benediction Moon, was released by New World Music in 1998 and was the best selling cd for the company for two consecutive years. She followed Benediction Moon with Magical Eclipse in 1999 and Pacifica released in 2003, both to great acclaim.Pia now lives surrounded by beautiful, old trees in North Carolina, with her husband and their children.
"Pia has an amazing, hypnotic, nearly angelic voice. I saw her in concert in England three times, and I wept with the sheer purity and beauty in her voice. Live, she touches the heart and the soul so deeply, words cannot express.
She is phenomenal!" - reviewer on amazon.com
