About Me

I'm Erik! Erik Charles Nielsen! You know me!(You know me?)

My Interests

You, plural. But mostly you, singular. No, I mean you, singular.

I'd like to meet:

People in general.

Music:

I love music! I tend to get a bit shy talking about music to people unless I know them really well, because I'm insecure about my lack of musical knowledge, and I'm always afraid someone will get upset with me. "You shouldn't be listening to that!", they would say. "That is stupid! Here, listen to this music I like." And then either it's awful, and then we have to hate each other because we disagree so much about music, or worse, it is better, and I have to confront the fact that I was wrong the whole time. Probably the former; I've heard enough music to know what I like.

Movies:

I need to see more movies. I didn't grow up seeing movies, really, and I still don't know a lot about them. That's a thing we could do -- you pick some movies, we'll watch them together, and then we can talk about them!

Television:

I miss television. I had a television for four months last year, and it was nice. I don't miss television enough to pay for it or anything, but I miss television.

Books:

I like Jane Austen! Jane Austen is a good writer!

Heroes:

steven wright, mostly.

Laryngitis update

An excerpt from my unfinished guidebook to Los Angeles

Welcome to Los Angeles! It is pretty much like most other places a person could live. If you enjoy people and things, I am pleased to report that there are a lot of people and things here, so I'm sure...

Erik speaks out on Radiohead!

I was a pretty big fan of "OK Computer" for a couple years in college. Not so much these days, but I've got nothing against Radiohead -- I can't think of anything they've done that I really disliked.&...

Bad news (eviction?) and good news (fat Erik shouting at Bostonians)

Well, I've received an eviction notice.  Or... some sort of pre-eviction notice.  Seems the city thinks my apartment is in kind of bad shape.  The city is wrong, fortunately. At the mom...

Don’t do a modern-dress production of Shakespeare, people.

I don't know if any of my blog readers are members of a self-important acting troupe, but if so, I'd like to ask them not to do a version of Shakespeare that is about businessmen, or Nazis, or some ot...

Some things I have written on the Internet recently

(presented here with minor alterations for context) When I think of the word "truculent", the first thing that comes to mind is that court case where that judge described Morrissey as "devious, trucul...

The Law of Conservation of Fun

Hypothesis: It is a lot more fun to be no fun than it is to be fun. Being fun is exhausting; being no fun is liberating. Fun generates no-fun at approximately the same rate that no-fun generates fun.&...

In which a good dream is hard to find

I’m having this recurring dream in which I’m doing some ordinary thing -- sitting in an office, in line at the grocery store, etc. -- and some person I don’t know mentions  that...
