Some interesting cemeteries in McIntosh County, Georgia.
People's names are listed by surnames. When reading this section, there maybe errors, incorrect spellings, .....etc..... We are not liable for the information in this book. It was compiled by a handful of local citizens.doing the best that they could, trying to save fast disappearing burial sites. There is a book available that has the following information in whole in a book called "Cemeteries of McIntosh County, Georgia.
" (1) Ceylon: Sign that is dated 1820 noting the Cemetery.
Abbreviated history: James Nephew who served as an officer in the Liberty County Regiment during the Revolutionary War, was granted Bounty Land for his service. Land handed down through generations. The older part is in the Northern portion where there are many unmarked and unidentified graves.
Section A: Many unknown, Cooper, Sheffield, Young, Gibbs
Section B: Many unidentified, This section held many numerous 1800s grave wares. Bailey, Rogers, Carter, Gibbs
Section C: Probably predates 1900. Many unmarked graves. Brush too thick to investigate.
Section D: Mansson, Bailey, Mungin, Unmarked graves.
Section E: Butler, Harris, Blige, Wilson, Unmarked graves.
Dunwoody: Short history.
Like Ceylon, Dunwoody also began as a plantation graveyard for slaves on top of Indigenous persons, buried much earlier.The land was a Crown Grant to Sir Patrick Houstoun in 1757. Handed down through the generations.
Section A: West, additional 175 unmarked graves. Butler, Singleton, Waldberg,
Section B: First four unmarked graves are from Union Camp Paper Company plats. 27 unmarked bundled Indian burials. Wilson, Frazier, Butler, Shaw, LeCount, Howard, many more unmarked and unidentified graves.
Cemetery status: Destroyed.
Kell's Grove Cemetery
Short History: John Kell (1784- 1827) The Cemetery began as a slave cemetery and some think that slaves from Black Island were also buried here. Contained many unmarked graves. Because of thick undergrowth a complete record of the unmarked graves was unable to be done. Some names obtained are as follows: Smith, Miller, Pelote, Bryant, Gould, Hawkins, Underwood.
Cemetery Status: Destroyed and now a subdivision.

ANOTHER GREAT MAN DIES Floyd Red Crow Westerman passes awayNative Times 12/13/2007
Floyd Red Crow Westerman (1936 - 2007)Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Sisseton-Wapheton Dakota musician, actor, and activist, passed away at 5:00 a.m. PST, at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after an extended illness. He was 71.Westerman, who began his career as a country singer, appeared in over 50 films and televison productions, including Dances with Wolves, Hidalgo, The Doors, and Poltergeist, and Northern Exposure. He appeared in 12 episodes of the 1990s TV series, Walker, Texas Ranger, as Uncle Ray Firewalker.As a young man, he was educated at the Wapheton and Flandreau Boarding Schools, where he became a close companion and life-long friend of Dennis Banks. He left his home on the Lake Traverse reservation in South Dakota, with a suitcase and an old guitar in hand. He rambled across the country playing country music and original tunes in bars and clubs, living for some time in Denver. In 1969, his first album Custer Died for Your Sins became the background theme of the emerging Red Power Movement.As a member of American Indian Movement, and a spokesman for the International Indian Treaty Council, Westerman traveled the world extensively working for the betterment of native people. His vision of improved social conditions for indigenous people around the globe is reflected in the music of his second album, The Land is Your Mother, 1982. In 2006, he won a NAMMY Award for his third album, A Tribute to Johnny Cash. During his career, he played and collaborated with a number of notable musicians including Willie Nelson, Kris Kristopherson, Buffy St. Marie, Jackson Browne, Harry Belafonte, and Sting.Westerman also worked throughout his life to empower Indian youth. "They are our future," he said in a November interview. "Today we are fighting a great battle against the popular culture that surrounds them. It's a battle for their hearts and minds. We need to work to inspire them to embrace their own history and culture. Without them, we Indians have no future."Westerman will be taken home to Sisseton, South Dakota for memorial services and burial. Fellow Congressional Black Caucus members are asking congress to approve provisions to the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act that would deny funding to the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma until they extend membership to a group known as the Freedmen. Clinton and McCain websites have no specific links or information for Native American peoples or issues, while Senator Obama’s campaign has a main page link directly to his website for “First Americans” (www.tribes.barackobama.com).In his statement on congressional action on tribal matters, Presidential Candidate Obama acknowledged the position of both the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and the Cherokee Freedmen, as well as the chasm that exists between them. He will likely lose the support of those on either extreme end of the controversy. By not offering his support to the controversial H.R. 2824 legislation promoted by the CBC, Senator Obama will undoubtedly be met with unrest by those that side with the Cherokee Freedmen. However, his indication of empathy of the Freedmen's plight will also be unwelcome to those on the other side of the Freedmen/Cherokee Nation debate. With an issue this polarizing, completely pleasing everyone without alienating anyone else just doesn't seem to be a viable option. It would be hard to believe, but in this instance, the place they live has kept this quiet, because they did not want to be accused of artificially inseminating the female buffalo. My Interests

Sharon was born in the hospital in Cherokee, N.C. She was very sick as a child and her parents were told to leave her and go home. They were young and didn't know what might happen. When they came back Sharon was missing and was taken to the Florida Children's Home Society where many Native kids were taken at this time (1950s) and adopted out to white parents to assimilate them. Sharon has been looking for her family for years. She was one of the first lady rodeo bronc riders in her area. She started into burial and sacred site protection over 40 years ago. And founded Save The Sacred Sites. She also has been a strong advocate for the environment and abused women and children.
Dave was in the USMC 1966-70. Came out and became a rock musician, singer and writer. He met the founder of Detroit AIM who talked seriously to Dave about what he had done for Native people. Dave changed and began to get into issues of Indigenous peoples over 30 years ago. He co-founded Save The Sacred Sites. Dave has also been a strong advocate for abused women and kids and the environment and has written several songs about the environment.

OUR TRIP TO NORTH CAROLINA

One of the things that I noticed about the campaign headquarters for Senator Obama was it was like a rainbow of people. Every race you can think of is involved in this campaign. I snapped a few quick pictures with my cell phone as I turned around the room. But I did not get all the ethnic groups represented in this room. Every walk of life was represented also, from business men and women to college kids to working folks.

Initially, they had wanted me to go to the Native American communities near Fayetteville, N.C. But the folks that I was riding with heard that Senator Obama was speaking at a nearby lighting company, and I was willingly kidnapped to ride there and wait for him. When we got there, they were only letting employees and journalists in. Well, I DO write these blogs for STSS. And Dr. Shaw owns the South Georgia Journal. So, here we go. I snapped this distance photo with my cell. We have others coming soon.

I heard Senator Obama speak and was impressed by his sincerity and knowledge of issues. He would think questions through and give very good answers. One lady asked if he thought he could win, then she would vote for him. He told her not to vote for him just because she thought he could win. He said to vote for the candidate that best represents the needs of your family.

Although I personally love the brown skin, full lips, and brown eyes of Native ladies. I see that Creator has made every woman have her own special beauty. What is on the outside is just a shell though. But the heart of a woman is what makes her truly beautiful. And her eyes and facial expression will reflect this inner beauty. I see this in a few faces these days and it does my heart good.Brothers I know that there are good men out there. And it is time to come forward and treat women, the mothers, wives, and working women/ providers as equals. I know a man wants to provide. But these days each one does their part to stay alive and above the fray of rising costs. Gas takes a major chunk of peoples pay checks these days. And food is not far behind. Our housing is almost impossible to get. But somehow every month the Creator sees that we survive. But there is more to this than just our finances at stake. Let me tell you why.The other night, Sharon and I both had severe spiritual attacks on us. Had we not been prepared for this type of thing, I probably wouldn't be writing this right now. And Save The Sacred Sites would be gone or someone else would carry on, I hope. But when she came to me and said, "Something is happening in the spiritual realm." I did not say, "Oh she is just a fearful woman." (And act like a macho fruit loop.) I looked at an equal and said, "Let's get to it." And we survived it. The joining of forces by people is what makes us stronger. And any prejudices that you have, can mean a weak spot for the attacks of spiritual forces hostile to you, to get through and do you in.The male and female is not only a balance in this physical world. But it is also balance in the spiritual world. And people who have a healthy dose of male and female within them are usually stronger people in the mental, physical and spiritual realms. By strength I mean the ability to endure through attacks and hardships, not big muscles.My light will shine brighter if I combine the opposites that are within me. And we are able to resist assaults when we are unified against them. It is an exponential type of situation. Alone you may put 100 times your strength down. But with a group you might put 100,000 times your strength down.You are only as strong as your weakest link, is a true saying. And when we weaken our brothers and sisters, we are actually hurting ourselves, because when you put a brother or a sister down verbally or otherwise, they might doubt themselves at a crucial time and that could cause you both to fall to a spiritual, mental or physical attack. I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. WE DRAW STRENGTH FROM EACH OTHER. WE NEED EACH OTHER.There is an old story about a good place and an evil place.But in each place the situation was the same. The people were born without arms. In one place the people were starving and fighting over the food. In the other place the people put the spoons and forks in their mouths and fed the other person. Then when that person was finished eating, that person fed them.Let me ask you this. Where do you live? In a good place? Or an evil place?Do you realize that each of us makes his/ her destiny what it is by how we treat each other? If you don't, I feel sorry for you. If you don't realize that you are creating your future with your treatment of others, you are going to feel like a victim one day and not know why all these things are happening to you.Your destiny is how you treat others.Dave

The destruction of untold numbers of ancient Native American burials and artifacts was done by the owner of Cathead landing. Although they deny vehemently that any burials existed when their archaeologists Bland and Associates did a study on the property saying that nothing was there. However, all previous studies of this area along Cathead Creek in Darien, Ga. have shown a series of 28 mounds along this Cathead Creek area which included human burials as confirmed in a later report done on the Indigo Harbor by New South and Associates. The owner of Bland & Associates has a museum and will say nothing is there and simply remove the burials and artifacts. Below is a prayer vigil held in October of 2007 at Cathead Landing while they were having their grand opening picnic on a destroyed burial site. While I prayed in a strong voice which could be heard by their guests. One of their guests came and asked what we were doing. So we told her and she went back and told the other guests and they all left. Officers were called and they knew us and waved at us. They told the owner, "How can I arrest someone for praying for you. Besides they're on someone else's property who gave them permission to be there." (LoL) The two pictures just before the last two pictures show the total flattening of the site so that when the river gets just a little up the townhouses will be flooded. All the large trees were destroyed and and there will be huge mudslides during a heavy rainy season. But the ancestors know how to stop these projects also. As of this date no townhouses are fully constructed. (01/10/2008)

WE TELL HER THAT WE ARE PRAYING BECAUSE THE ANCESTORS GRAVES HAVE BEEN DESECRATED AND THESE DEVELOPERS ARE TRYING TO DESTROY A HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD. SHE GOES BACK AND TELLS THE OTHER GUESTS. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. So we have come to cash this check ? a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied, as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "For Whites Only". We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. I think probably the hardest thing that I have ever had to stomach was when Senator John McCain wrote a bill and Bill Clinton signed the paper that gave the Navajos lands to a British coal company (Peabody Coal) and moved them to a radioactive toxic dump on the Rio Puerco in the 1990s. Kids are born so deformed there that they are hardly recognizable as human. And adults die of radiation diseases. Now the Clintons want another shot at the Whitehouse and McCain wants his first shot at the White House. And I hope that they both fail miserably. Bush didn't help them either. We wrote him about the problem Clinton had done and he ignored it. The whole deal was set up by a lawyer for the Mormon Church. Here Bush gives awards to the Navajo Code Talkers who saved the USAs butt in World War II by talking in their language so the enemies of the USA could not intercept important secret transmissions. Then he leaves them on the radioactive toxic dump. This is called "lip service."

HE TOLD US THAT THESE DEVELOPERS WERE TRYING TO BUILD ON A ONE ACRE PLOT AND STACK UP A BUNCH OF CONDOS RIGHT ON THE MARSH AND ON BURIALS. HE SHOWED US THE OLD ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES. HE SHOWED US OLD NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS WITH PICTURES OF A NATIVE BURIAL UNEARTHED RIGHT ON THE PROPERTY LINE BETWEEN THE FORT AND THE PROPOSED BUILDING PROJECT. THE DEVELOPER HAD AN ARCHAEOLOGIST COME IN AND DO A SUPERFICIAL PHASE ONE STUDY ON LAND THAT HAD ALREADY SHOW DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE OF BURIALS. A PHASE 1 IS ONLY SHOVEL TESTS ON THE SURFACE THAT WILL NOT SHOW SIX FOOT DOWN BURIALS. THE PARK WANTED ULTRASOUND STUDIES DONE THAT WOULD NOT HAVE DISTURBED THE BURIALS. BUT THAT WAS IGNORED. WE ARE GLAD TO COOPERATE WITH OUR PARK RANGERS ON THIS PROJECT.ONCE AGAIN THE COMMUNITY WENT TO THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MEETINGS. AND ONCE AGAIN PALMS WERE GREASED AND THE PROJECT WAS PUSHED THROUGH BY OUR NOTORIOUS THREE COMMISSIONERS.I WENT TO THE PARK FOLKS THAT ARE RIGHT BESIDE THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT. AND I ASKED THEM IF WE COULD PRAY RIGHT OUTSIDE THE FORT. BY LAW I REALLY DON'T NEED TO HAVE THEIR PERMISSION TO BE IN THE 10 FOOT RIGHT OF WAY BETWEEN THE ROAD AND THEIR PROPERTY. BUT I DO IT FOR RESPECT. THE FORT KING GEORGE FOLKS ARE ON OUR SIDE THEY RESPECT BURIALS AND KNOW THAT THERE ARE BURIALS ON THIS SMALL ONE ACRE AREA THAT THEY ARE GOING TO BUILD 17 CONDOS ON WITH A SWIMMING POOL AND TENNIS COURTS. (ALL THIS ON ONE ACRE?) THEY ARE PLANNING TO STACK THE CONDOS RIGHT ON THE MARSH (ANOTHER SINKING STRUCTURE). THE ENVIRONMENTAL FOLKS HAVE JOINED US ALSO, BECAUSE IF THE MARSHES GO OUR PROTECTION AGAINST HURRICANES AND OUR FILTRATION SYSTEM FOR WATER POLLUTION GOES WITH THEM.WE GOT THERE AT 3PM EST. I HAD BEEN THERE EARLIER TALKING TO THE PARK FOLKS. AS USUAL I INSTRUCTED NOT TO TALK TO ANY HOSTILE PERSON. JUST PRAY.THEY CALLED THE POLICE AS USUAL AND GOT NOTHING FROM THEM BECAUSE WE HAVE THIS WHOLE THING CHECKED OUT LEGALLY (REMEMBER MY INSTRUCTIONS FOR PLANNING FOR BATTLE).NEXT I BEGAN TO PRAY OUT LOUD. I CALLED ON CREATOR GOD TO TOUCH THEIR HEARTS. I HAD ASKED HIM TO BRING A THUNDER STORM TO STOP THIS EVENT. BUT I HEARD HIS ANSWER IN MY SPIRIT THAT HE WANTED THEM TO HEAR WHAT HE WAS PUTTING IN MY MOUTH. SO HE DENIED MY REQUEST FOR RAIN AND THUNDER. LOL BUT MY PUNY VIEW ON THIS SITUATION IS ABOUT LIKE A GRUNT. AND HE IS THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF AND THE FIELD COMMANDER AND THE PLATOON SARG ALL IN ONE. HE KNOWS IT ALL. HIS VIEW OF THE SITUATION IS UNIVERSAL. MINE IS FINITE. HIS IS INFINITE.NEXT I BEGAN TO TELL THEM IN MY PRAYER OUT LOUD WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO DESECRATE BURIALS AND DESTROY THE EARTH.AS I PRAYED ALL YOUR VOICES CAME TO ME. I COULD FEEL YOUR PRAYERS. WHAT A RUSH!!! BUT YOUR PRAYERS WERE TRANSLATED INTO CREATOR GOD'S POWERFUL SPIRIT BEING THERE. I THOUGHT, "MAN, I COULD LIVE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME!!!" LOL BUT I KNOW THAT, THAT AIN'T HOW IT WORKS.AS I PRAYED MY BEING WAS FILLED AND WORDS CAME POURING OUT. CREATOR'S PRESENCE JUST TOOK OVER. I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER ALL THAT I SAID.A YOUNG MAN IN A FANCY CAR CAME AND ASKED ABOUT WHAT I WAS DOING THERE. I TOLD HIM. HE SAID SURELY THEY DID AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDY. I TOLD HIM HOW THEY HAD SKIRTED THAT WITH BUY OUTS AND PAY OFFS, HE SAID THAT HE WAS GOING TO THEIR GRAND OPENING EVENT. GEE I WONDER IF HE TALKED TO THE REST OF THE GUESTS. UH OH THE WORD GOT OUT. LOLNEXT A BOSS HOGG TYPE OLD MAN PULLED UP AND TRIED TO STARE ME DOWN. LOL HE DON'T KNOW WHO IS IN ME.
