I'm curious and I just have to ask this question.
I have been involved in the protection of Sacred Sites for over 25 years; I have been involved in stopping those who sell Native Religion, those who say they were "GIVEN" the right to run/conduct Native Ceremonies. Those who say, they are spiritual leaders, or were given the right to run/conduct Native Ceremonies but were never given this right to run/conduct ceremonies by a "Respected Medicine person" of a Native tribe or even ever been appointed by the tribe elders or tribal council to run/conduct such ceremoninies
Mind you this would include Native people and non-Native people. The non-Native people might attend 1 sun dance or even a sweat and then say they were given the right to run/conduct ceremonies....
All of a sudden they are the experts in this ceremony!
I know we have Native people who travel over-seas and run/conduct Native ceremonies there. I know we have those or other tribes who run/conduct Native ceremonies in various states where even their own tribe or people are not even located today in that state but reside in another state on their own Native reservation and never had this type of ceremony given to them before.
Yet, they run/conduct this ceremony on another "Tribal Nations" Native territories never ever receiving permission from that tribe who might reside in that state.
Yet we have friends whom we might know and due to the fact we know them and they are cool As a person, we tend to over-look this and say, "This is ok, he/she is a good person with a good heart...
But, what bothers me is?
Isn't this a double standard in over-looking our own Native people? I would never go to another state and run/conduct a ceremony without receiving permission from the "Elders or Tribal Council" of that tribe who might reside on that reservation.
If we are going to protect our ceremonies we must go after everyone who sells our religion or even those who conduct ceremonies are conducting ceremonies away from their own reservation. If they were given this right, it should be conduct on their home reservation.
