MEGWETCHThe Ribbon Town Singers is a Native American Northern Style drum group that is based out of the Northern Indiana and Southwestern Michigan areas. The name of the Drum is Zenba-Odanek, which means Ribbon Town in Potawatomi. John Warren, his son John T and his nephew David Martin thought Ribbon Town would be an appropriate name for the drum since it refers to the trading of ribbon between the French and local Natives, in the Niles and South Bend area during the colonial times. The French had a trading post set up along the St. Joseph river in the Niles, Michigan area and would routinely trade ribbon to the local Pokagon Band Natives for furs. The trade for ribbon became so frequent, that many of the Natives in the Midwest started referring to this area as Zenba-Onanek (Ribbon Town). To stay in touch with their Native culture, John and the other fellow early drum members thought this name would be perfect. In an effort to keep the teachings of the drum ongoing, Ribbon Town is comprised of both veteran and young singers. The RibbonTown singers write and compose most of the songs they sing, but also sing songs that were given to the lead singer, John T. Warren, by other prominent drum groups and influential singers from around the country. The drum enjoys traveling around to both traditional and contest pow wows. For their first CD, RibbonTown wanted to give the listeners of “DOORMAN” a variety of powwow songs. DOORMAN offers the listeners some honor songs, intertribals and some specialty dance songs, like round dances and side steps just to name few. Every so often, people have come to the singers of RibbonTown to compose specialty/honor songs for their family, certain ceremonies and other social/cultural events. One song on “DOORMAN” that John Warren of RibbonTown composed was a Flag song, which a very well respected veteran and member of the Native community requested. RibbonTown makes note of this on their CD and now sings that special flag song for honoring the Eagle Staffs and other flags brought into the powwow circle. If you like RibbonTown’s sound, they will be selling the DOORMAN CD for $20.00 on the pow wow trail. RibbonTown hopes to see you on the trail and looks forward to seeing you dance to our songs.
