Jimmy Dickens was born in Bolt, West Virginia in 1920. Although he stands
only 4'11, he is a giant in the field of Country Music.He began his singing career at radio station WOLS in Beckly West Virginia, while attending college at the University of West Virginia. He later moved on to WIBC in Indianapolis, Indiana, and then to The Nations Station, WLW Cincinnati, Ohio.It was in Cincinnati in 1947, that Jimmy performed in a concert at Cincinnatis Music Hall. the show was headlined by The King of Country Music, Roy Acuff. Mister Acuff said, that although he was the star of the show, when he introduced Jimmy Dickens, that was all she wrote, Jimmy Dickens took the show.So impressed was Acuff, that he invited Jimmy to do a guest spot on the Grand Ole Opry. In 1948 he was made a member of the Opry, without having scored a hit record or a recording contract. He was signed to a recording contract with columbia records in 1948.
His first release and hit was the now famous song,. Take an old cold tater and wait. It was not only a hit, but gave his good friend Hank Williams, the idea for a nickname that is still used with much love and affection by fans all around the world... Tater...Jimmy scored many hits with novelty songs, but also became the master of the country ballad.Jimmy can still be found most Saturday nights at the Opry house, wowing the audiences with his wonderful sense of humor, and his good old country music.He steps to the Mic. and claims to the world, Im Little Jimmy Dickens, or Willie Nelson, after taxes. .He was rightfully inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1983.
