Josef Váchal - Morella
"The short story "Morella" describes the plight of a woman whose soul can never die. Throughout the story Morella's physical form degenerates. She spends her time ill in bed, teaching her husband black magic and occult practices. There is a curse on Morella causing her to have an immortal soul. This curse is the result of her studies of black magic and of her occult practices. Her husband realizes Morella's situation when they are studying one day and thereafter wishes that she would die. She scares him. Poe explains the infinite loneliness that Morella experiences by being deprived of eternal rest. At the moment that she dies, she gives birth to a daughter thereby passing her soul into a living creature. Her husband absolutely adores his daughter until her tenth birthday when she is christened with the name Morella, an event which brings her mother's spirit back to fill the daughter's body. The story concludes with the husband's taking his daughter to a sepulcher to expel her mother's spirit from her. The child dies, and he discovers that her mother's bones are gone from her grave."
