A note from Graeme on the new single:
I was inspired/provoked to write this song in response to the New Zealand government signing a Free Trade Agreement with China.
When I began writing the song it was entitled “Fresh Freddy’s Takeaway 2012â€, then later amended to “2010†and finally, seeing the timeline for change was moving so rapidly, the title was amended to what you now see on the cover.
It is set in the future obviously, how far in the future is a moot point. I hope the song is self explanatory, but if not, listen to it, ponder that fact that prices are set by the market, by supply and demand. Increased overseas demand for New Zealand products, will mean higher prices for New Zealanders (anyone too poor to buy a block of cheese these days?). Ponder what you might (be able to afford to) eat this time next year, where it will be manufactured, grown or harvested and under what environmental conditions and labour laws.
The song can be downloaded free from www.myspace.com/theverlaines. Feel free to give the song to anyone whom you think might be interested and if you feel like contributing anything towards it, donate something to your local food bank, there are increasingly plenty of folk who need their services.
“Let the market decide!†I think Milton Friedman said that.
“The market is a moronâ€, I said that.
