Heartfelt lyrics penned down in Adelaide one early autumn morning started it all."I always wanted to write and perform music with my family, it was just a matter of when", recalls THE DIVIDE’s singer/songwriter Jeremy Owen. After a long hiatus between bands, it was the desire to write a song that expresses true emotion that provided Jeremy with the catalyst. “I hadn’t had any inspiration to write lyrics for a long time, and it wasn’t until I fell in love with my girlfriend that I could put pen to paperâ€. Not long after, Jeremy’s girlfriend Emma became his wife, and jamming in the lounge room with their brother Tim Owen and friend Jerry Brown quickly ensued. It’s this kinship, familiarity and family intimacy that shines through on THE DIVIDE’s debut self-titled 12 track album, released nationally on September 8, 2007 through AmpHead/The Orchard. Hand-on-heart, grounded lyrics express the passionate experiences of life, from love ones lost to fun holiday memories spent around the camp fire.Old mix tapes from the car bring a variety of influences to THE DIVIDE’s sound, including The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, The Promise Ring and David Gray to name a few. Similarities to these artists swiftly end where THE DIVIDE’s counter melodies, layered harmonies and use of Adelaide’s Zephyr Quartet and Ben Folds’piano begin. Creative recording sessions captured between the textured mudbrick walls of Mixmasters Studio inspired Emma Owen in painting the album’s artwork, oil on canvas. After a recent tour to Victoria, Jerry Brown decided to hang up his electric guitar to pursue other interests and career aspirations. What initially seemed like a loss for the band in theory evolved into a blessing in disguise with THE DIVIDE’s taking on a more stripped back, open and acoustic-driven feel.Recent album launches in South Australia led to sold-out shows and great response from audience. With their first film clip for track nine NEVER LOOK BACK now complete, the album about to be released to radio and many more shows and festivals to come in 2007/2008, the future expanse of THE DIVIDE looks long and bright.
