The Devil Is In My Details

Active Evil is better than Passive Good.

About Me

I'm a poet, a pirate, a pauper and pagan, at times prophetic and often pragmatic, with a touch of whimsy and more than a little bit of ridiculousness. Consider me a human carnivale, many wonders to see, many secrets lurking, possible dangers and likely surprises. I'm a book junkie, word whore and gourmet cook with a penchant for classic cinema, old time radio and red wine. I take my coffee with menthol cigarettes and my conversation with a bit of randomness. I have been known to do absurd things for avocados, clementines, aged sharp cheddar cheese and crab rangoon. I despise people who use the phrase "I'm not much of a reader", broccoli, wet paper and the sound of plastic rustling. I am more than a little lethal. I am a published poet, a beginning novelist, an avid blogger and a tactile sensualist -I am not a resource to be flagrantly wasted or taken for granted. I adore the game of innuendo. I have been known to sit and watch someone for more than two hours, merely to note the details of their behavior. I think that language killed our observational skills, then we killed language, the Ipod killed what was left of conversation and everything is so instant gratification that we should be dubbed the "Ramen society." I have indulged in behavior that did more than raise my skirts and my mother's eyebrow and I've not got an ounce of shame for it. I am a revolution waiting to happen. I am blatantly sexual at times, I have a massive oral fixation, I am as open as a 24 hour convenience store and I will get on a soapbox from time to time. So go on, throw your tokens -and watch my sideshow unfold around you. Impress me with your intellect, dazzle me with your wit and woo me with honeyed words of naughtiness....and I think we just might make nice. And I give fair warning -I know at least 50 words for whore - so don't make me use them.

I'd like to meet:

It may help to understand human affairs to be clear that most of the great triumphs and tragedies of history are caused, not by people being fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, but by people being fundamentally people. -Neil GaimanMusic expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent. -Victor HugoIf a woman hasn't got a tiny streak of harlot in her, she's a dry stick as a rule. -David Herbert LawrenceEvery harlot was a virgin once. -William BlakeAchieving life is not the equivalent of avoiding death. -Ayn RandThe smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities. -Ayn RandHOMICIDE, n. The slaying of one human being by another. There are four kinds of homicide: felonious, excusable, justifiable, and praiseworthy, but it makes no great difference to the person slain whether he fell by one kind or another --the classification is for advantage of the lawyers. -Ambrose BierceIn Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. -Orson WellesI think that technologies are morally neutral until we apply them. It's only when we use them for good or for evil that they become good or evil. -William GibsonSometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane. -Philip K. DickI, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naive or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman. -Anais NinI intend to live forever, or die trying. -Groucho MarxMilitary justice is to justice what military music is to music. -Groucho MarxOne can survive everything nowadays, except death, and live down anything, except a good reputation. -Oscar WildeWhen men stop believing in God, it isn't that they then believe in nothing: they believe in everything. -Umberto EcoA book is a fragile creature, it suffers the wear of time, it fears rodents, the elements and clumsy hands. so the librarian protects the books not only against mankind but also against nature and devotes his life to this war with the forces of oblivion. -Umberto EcoVeal cutlet came down...started beatin' the shit outta my cuppa coffee...coffee just wasn't strong enough to defend itself.... -Tom WaitsSex is as important as eating or drinking and we ought to allow the one appetite to be satisfied with as little restraint or false modesty as the other. -Marquis De SadeIf I asked for a cup of coffee, someone would search for the double meaning. -Mae WestIf death meant just leaving the stage long enough to change costume and come back as a new character...Would you slow down? Or speed up? -Chuck PalahniukAnarchism, really stands for the liberation of the human mind from the dominion of religion; the liberation of the human body from the dominion of property; liberation from the shackles and restraint of government. -Emma GoldmanBe regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work. -FlaubertTo announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. -Theodore RooseveltSacred cows make the best hamburger. -Mark TwainPatience, n. A minor form of despair, disguised as a virtue. -Ambrose BierceThere is hardly anyone whose sexual life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world at large with surprise and horror. -William Somerset MaughamDo you remember when you found out you wouldn't live forever? People don't talk about this, but everybody had to go through it because you're not born with that knowledge. -David CronenbergI don't say that we ought to all misbehave, but we ought to look as if we could. -Orson WellesI take a simple view of life: keep your eyes open and get on with it. -Lawrence OlivierDevelop interest in life as you see it; in people, things, literature, music - the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself. -Henry MillerIt has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important. (Sherlock Holmes) -Arthur Conan DoyleIllusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces. -Sigmund FreudDiana Christensen: Hi. I'm Diana Christensen, a racist lackey of the imperialist ruling circles. Laureen Hobbs: I'm Laureen Hobbs, a badass commie nigger. Diana Christensen: Sounds like the basis of a firm friendship. Diana Christensen: I'm interested in doing a weekly dramatic series based on the Ecumenical Liberation Army. The way I see the series is: Each week we open with an authentic act of political terrorism taken on the spot, in the actual moment. Then we go to the drama behind the opening film footage. That's your job, Ms. Hobbs. You've got to get the Ecumenicals to bring in that film footage for us. The network can't deal with them directly; they are, after all, wanted criminals. -From Network, written by Paddy ChayefskyThe key question isn't "What fosters creativity?" but it is, "Why in God's name isn't everyone creative?" Where was the human potential lost? How was it crippled? I think therefore a good question might be not why do people create? But why do people not create or innovate? We have got to abandon that sense of amazement in the face of creativity, as if it were a miracle if anybody created anything. -Abraham MaslowCreativity is the sudden cessation of stupidity. -Edwin LandThere's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line. -Oscar LevantThe life of the creative man is lead, directed and controlled by boredom. Avoiding boredom is one of our most important purposes. -Saul SteinbergMarx, Darwin and Freud are the three most crashing bores of the Western World. Simplistic popularization of their ideas has thrust our world into a mental straitjacket from which we can only escape by the most anarchic violence. -William GoldingIn History, stagnant waters, whether they be the stagnant waters of custom or those of despotism, harbour no life; life is dependent on the ripples created by a few eccentric individuals. In homage to that life & vitality, the community has to brave certain perils & must countenance a measure of heresy. One must live dangerously if one wants to live at all. -Herbert ReadWe are men without God, without Masters & Fatherland, irreconcilable enemies of any despotism, moral or collective, i.e. laws & dictatorships (including that of the proletariat), & impassioned lovers of the culture of oneself. -Fernand PelloutierDo not read, as children do, to amuse yourself, or like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live. -Gustave FlaubertYou cannot buy the Revolution. You cannot make the Revolution. You can only be the Revolution. It is in your spirit or it is nowhere. -Ursula K. LeGuin..These are people who's work I support and so should you.....

Books:

I read obsessively, sometimes 4 or more books a week. Literature is my drug of choice. I am a whore for sci-fi/fantasy but my collection runs the gamut from Ayn Rand, various biographies, some history, philosophy, trashy historical romance novels, murder mysteries and detective stories, a hefty amount of Sherlock Holmes and some children's books. Its easier to say what I DON'T read -politics, most non-fiction (except for what Brando sends me), self-help books and hefty religious tomes are probably not going to be found.

I am currently reading or into:

The Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller Chronicles series, the new Lilith Saintcrow Jill Kismet series, the Dictionary of Psychological Terms and Phrases, my text for Literature of the Romantic Age (think Blake, Wadsworth, Byron etc...) and as always, whatever takes my fancy,

Heroes:

"One cannot always be a hero, but one can always be a human." -Goethe
"Including last night, that's three fucking damage incidents that didn’t kill you. Pain or damage don’t end the world, or despair or fucking beatin's. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man — and give some back." -Al Swearengen
If you understand that -we're probably friends.
Those who can face, not just the good in themselves, or the honorable, silly, or irrational -but the ugly, embittered, lonely and vicious -face it -and then take it and turn it into something beautiful, something comical or something wonderful -something that can no longer harm you or anyone around you...
