About Me

I just finished my first novel and then sold it to Simon and Schuster. It feels better than a case of free bourbon. I am an excellent cook, though not as good as my husband. My tastes range from red-wine foie gras with pan-roasted quail to Corner Bistro Burgers. Damn but Corner Bistro Burgers are satisfying. I love beer and will talk about it to the ultimate discomfort and dismay of those who just wanted to briefly mention liking beer. Fashion is a big part of my life even though I know intellectually it's an absurd preoccupation. Bravery and self-sacrifice fascinate me, and I assume strangers have good character. Alarms make me angry. People who stand in front of the doors while I am trying to get out of the subway car also make me angry. I am trying to be kinder to people than I used to be. But not the people who block the subway doors. They can be shipped to an Australian penal colony circa 1855.

I've Fallen in Love With My KitchenAid Mixer

Gabe and I just got a KitchenAid mixer. It allows the baking of bread to be accomplished in the merest trice.  Well, in all honesty, perhaps two or three trices, or treece, as bread is difficult....

My Future Riches

So my new job looks as if it's going to be pretty entertaining, particularly considering my penchant for talking about beer.  As Markt is a Belgian restaurant, I can talk about beer for as long a...

The Return

Well, we are finally back from Europe and I am just now starting to be able to sleep past seven in the morning (a major priority in my life since approx. 1992).  The whole trip was fierce, but fo...

Commercialism (A Pun)

My friend Jen just wrote to tell me it's going on for another six months, so I think I'm going to nip it in the bud and confess my involvement with a little restaurant called "Hola!."  "Hola!" ...

Upon Certain Elements of Last Week

Not for the faint at heart, ladies and gentlemen. Last week, a friend of mine at work sprained her elbow and we all determined to help make up the extra shifts.  This was an inauspicious beginni...

The Guy Hanging Out Outside The Subway Thinks I Have What It Takes to Be a Star

Yes, it's only an assumption, but really...he must.  Else why gaze at me in that baleful fashion, dark eyes brooding over darker sunglasses, high on life and god knows what else, and why would he...

Discount NADA

Ok, here's the thing... What is it about the bargain-bound? Do we have to yearn for discount *everything*?  What about discount sushi?  Do we care whether it's refridgerated or not?  H...

Watching Puddles Gather Rain

I am in a land where using an umbrella in any weather is tantamount to wearing a football helmet to cross the street, and a woman in the grocery store said "excuse me" yesterday because she was within...

Merry, Merry

I once loved Christmas music. Those days were fond and fading. So my friend John C and I are doing a corporate Christmas gig in a week or so, and in rehearsing/researching this event, I have been exp...
