Gathered each day are the best and the brightest in show business, the world's top headliners telling tales among themselves while enjoying the Club's excellent facilities, exquisite surroundings and superb cuisine.Reciting the long roster of luminaries who have graced the Friars would give a name-dropper laryngitis. In a tradition that started at the turn of the century under the leadership of George M. Cohan, The Friars Club has attracted the elite of show business as well as distinguished industry leaders through the years. The exhalted position of Abbot has been held by such legends as George M. Cohan, George Jessel, Mike Todd, Milton Berle, Joe E. Lewis, Ed Sullivan, Frank Sinatra, Alan King, and now Jerry Lewis.As important as their dedication to entertaining the world, is the devotion of Friars Members to charitable causes. Those in show business are givers, not takers, and the Club's support to humanitarian causes has always been achieved with modesty. Throughout their long and honorable history the Friars have, through their Celebrity Luncheons, Roasts and Testimonial Dinners, raised millions of dollars for worthy causes. Abbot Frank Sinatra said, ''Their continuous good work for charity rather than their great triumphs on the stage of the world is the true glory of this band of earthly angels known as the New York Friars.''There have been many changes since the Club's inception in 1904, but through the century it has remained devoted to the original purpose of providing a warm and comfortable environment for the entertainment industry. Of the Clubs 1,500 Members, two-thirds must be involved in show business related activities. The remaining one-third of the Membership consists of prominent individuals from the corporate world.With its distinguished past and promising future, the Friars Club will remain an interesting and prominent force in the entertainment industry for centuries to come.
