Well, it's like this...

About Me

I play guitar.

Have done for ages...
... well, about a third of a century.
Recent years my thing has been to do it using a loop pedal. I'll play some chords and loop them, live, then maybe layer some bass and percussive sounds to give a nice wallpaper-like backing to improvise over, all using the same guitar.
As for style, I think it's cool if you've got one.
I'm pretty into improv as an ethic. I generally dislike things which have been too thought through and practised because I think it kills the spirit; it all gets closer to bureaucracy than music.
I also love guitars and all things about them. I started learning about how they're put together when at school, made my first solid body before leaving school and I'm still fascinated with the qualities of wood and techniques of construction as well as what all this does to the final sound. A sensual science.
Guitar making is the nearest thing to creating life that human endeavour has managed.
Stuff DNA and Frankenstein, it's the tonewoods.

One of those gasping sighs - :sigh: or :gasp: as they chat it. I've just read a nice, funny and interesting transcript of a 1995 interview with John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas, and his mate Scott...

staying power

It's been at least six months now that I've been listening to Yasmin Levy more than any other music, over and over.  I haven't got round to loading the software on my computer to play around wit...

On Fogieness

Last night was New Year's eve. I went to meet a couple of friends at a pub.  I thought I should. It was really horrible. Bad beer, so I took the car - at least the soda water's okay there. There ...

Wakey wakey

Awake. Lie on your back, eyes open: do not focus. You are the ceiling; you are the bed; you are the sky; you are the earth; you are the boiling core; you are the freezing vacuum of space. Your thought...

Bluesfest and the death of a legend

Bluesfest was held at the M19 bar in Levenshulme Manchester, and was a jolly shindig. While not everyone adhered to the blues idiom, and I confess my own set crossed the line into some more jazzy soun...

knuckle ache

It is possible to get knuckle ache by proxy. I have had something of a pallaver with a classical guitar lately whereby, for reasons too complicated to go into, I have lost the saddle of a guitar I've ...

Defining art

Anyone heard the phrase: "Making Meaning" before? It came to me today, but whether as an idea from the muse or just something I've heard before I don't know. Seems to me that phrase could almost...

MySpace searches

Has anyone else found that the search engine in MySpace is completely useless? I find it rather irritating that it's always more successful, when one wants to find someone, to go to google.  MySp...

grass, smoke and noise

Once more, a word from my sponsor. Hmm, well, maybe the old guitar's getting grumpy at my neglect and wanting to have a go on the blog again, but I must report an adventure with another guitar on Satu...

i-God

And now a word from my sponsor. Hi, nice of the old guitar to let me have a word. I had this whimsical idea for a webdomain recently, perhaps for a religious on-line supermarket, or maybe for MP3s of...
