I'm Kaya. I thought I was just weird until someone said I'm quirky. I like that better. I work hard, play hard and bite hard, but I'm not a very hard person at all... Read the small print if you want, but there are no guarantees or health and safety advice.

I’m a singer/songwriter/freelance musician who work and play in the pool of life: Liverpool. I run Aurora Borealis Music and write songs and vocal coach a few people; some great and some still trying...
I'm one of the founding members of the Liverpool Music Week team (see top friends) and I teach a bit at LIPA where I used to study, and the reason I kissed the killer whales and midnight sun goodbye. I'm also a judge on the MIBI awards (also top friends) with Chris Martin, Steve Levine, Harvey Goldsmith and other industry professionals. Which means I've got enough to do, really… But always do more and should learn to say no. Working on that. I try to write songs that sneak in to your heart and stick in your head with clever lyrics and heaps of character, as my biography claims. You can read that on my WEBSITE

Well; I've always done too much since I was little little little; Ice hockey, football, dancing, violin, theatre, reading etc.. Now my hobbies are mostly my work (sad, but true..), dancing, football (I prefer doing to watching! Just like sex really ;o) and sharing close wine with good friends. Or not sharing rum ;o)

I'm originally from the North of Norway: Narvik - It's a beautiful place filled with some very close friends and quite a few small town minds that never got me, cause back then I was weird! Well, I wasn't easy to put into a box (metaphorically speaking, obviously.. I'm quite easy to fit into a box as I'm tiny and double jointed…) Oh well. Hope you like my music :o)

Band Members: If you book the Kaya band to play, you get these guys as well: Andrew on guitar, Sian on drums and Russ on bass (who actually produces the record with Kaya too..

If you are really lucky you could also have a piece of cello from Nicole, and backing vocals from my sister Ane.. although that's mostly on the record.

Thanks to all the guys I've played with through the years, especially Tord, Alex, Petter, Vicky and Jo, cauce it's always been enjoyable!!
Influences: Anything that rocks my world; Pearl Jam, Cat Stevens, Kemopetrol, Damien Rice, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Skunk Anansie, Alanis, Janis Joplin, Counting Crows, Live, Nina Simone, U2, Jeff Buckley, Bjørk, Radiohead, Seigmenn, Jewel, Nirvana, The Doors, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, everything else i grew up listening to... Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jethro Tull, Led Zepellin et.c.

I also like individual songs from artists that i don't like. I love blues... blues is sexy. Some jazzy... mostly vocal music. I like good vocals. And some Norwegian bands that you don't know... or might do. Who knows?
Sounds Like: What do you think? People tell me Skin from Skunk Anansie, Alanis Morissette, Jewel and my sister. And that it sounds like I mean what I'm singing. Which I do! Or did... anyway. Just listen!

:: PRESS CUTS ::

“An outstandingly talented Norwegian/Scouse songwriter, Kaya's output is hard, constructed melodicism delivered with an extraordinary vocal talent.”
- Order, BarFly Magazine
“A driving riff, top class production and Kaya's outstanding vocals make this track easy on the ear, but don't let that fool you, there's a message in there about self-respect and knowing who you are.” - Rough Trade

I can honestly say that this girl is in the first division of the first league of champions in her craft. Meat Market Special is cocky and charming, spritely and energetic, dynamic and original and The sick champagne waltz just happens to be all of that and oh my God how the hauntingly chilling strings opening makes this song so much more! - International Online Magazine

“Both as a musician and a person, Kaya strikes the perfect balance. She is warm, charming and light-hearted in the gaps between songs and serious, powerful and mesmerising when it comes to the rendering of her music. - Pollen8

“ The best female rock singer in Liverpool Liverpool.”
- Sakura, rockphotographer.net

“ Music of this calibre can burst your heart with its inviolate beauty (...) one of the most compelling, complete and classy acts that you're likely ever to see (…) these are real songs performed by an artist deserving of a wider stage. The widest stage.” Magnificent. "
- Joe Shooman, Drowned in Sound Magazine

”Vulnerable, raw and excellent! (...) This is definitely one of the musical highlights of the Summer. Kaya glows on stage. "
- (Frontpage and full page) Ann-Kristin Hanssen, Fremover

Huge vocal extravaganza, dynamic songs at their best. "

“The acoustic guitar and Kaya's voice are the only instruments needed to give the song the intensity that only a gifted vocalist and musician could achieve.” Uneathedtreasures.co.uk

”Another fine set from Kaya” BBC Merseyside
