Forged on the internet in the summer of 2005, The Great Noise Ensemble was formed when a call went out on craigslist.com from composer/conductor Armando Bayolo. This call was answered by seven brave area musicians united by their passion for new music. These seven then sent out a call to other like-minded artists and before long Great Noise had grown into the sixteen instrumentalists and two singers which now comprise its core membership. The mission of this group is to fight for the performance of new American works and to promote local talent in contemporary music.
Great Noise's first season was a complete success, presenting concerts throughout the D.C. region as well as at Shenandoah University and garnering praise from Gail Wein on NewMusicBox.org. The 2006-07 season will see Great Noise return to such familiar haunts from season one such as the Charles Sumner School and the Patricia M. Sitar Center in Washington D.C. as well as new venues like the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring, MD. In 2006-07 Great Noise will be the ensemble in residence for the Washington chapter of the American Composers Forum and will inaugurate their Composers in Profile concerts with a 70th birthday celebration of the great American composer Steve Reich on October 7, 2006, the only such event in the Washington region.
