Mark Chambers

I am a composer of music that displays both visceral and rational qualities. On the surface my music can oscillate from moments of quiet reflection to explosive outbursts. On a deeper level my music exhibits highly controlled formal constraints and a non-traditional harmonic vocabulary. It is a music that is informed by both serial procedures and spectral processes.I was born in Greenville, SC where I began my musical training studying the trumpet and then voice and music theory at a high school arts program.I attended Anderson College and earned an AFA in vocal performance and subsequently completed my BM in music theory and composition at Samford University.I went on to study with Michael Kurek at the Blair School of Music of Vanderbilt University and Kenneth Jacobs at the University of Tennessee where I earned the MM in composition.Presently on the staff of Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church in Suffolk, VA I am completing a DMA (ABD) at the University of Alabama where I have studied composition with C.P. First and Tristan Murail and electronic music with David Durant. I have also had additional studies with Harrison Birtwistle.I was selected as a finalist in the 1st Annual Internacional Concurso Miniaturas in Spain with other musical awards including the Victor Herbert / ASCAP award and the College Music Society Student Composition Award (Southern Division). I am also a member of the Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers.
