rarescale

About Me

rarescale was formed in July 2003 to promote the alto flute and its repertoire. The inaugural rarescale performance took place at the Reid Hall in Edinburgh in August 2003 as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with music for alto flute and piano performed by Carla Rees and Kerry Yong. Since then, the group has expanded to include diverse instrumentation, including electronics, guitar, cello, violin, cor anglais and bass clarinet. The group has performed in New York (at the invitation of the Flute Club of New York), San Francisco, Los Angeles and Minneapolis and has international links with several composers. UK performances have included the Premiere Series in London, recitals in Birmingham and Sheffield, and appearances at the British Flute Society’s 5th International Convention, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Dartington International Summer School and at the UK Microfest 1 Festival of Microtonal music. Members of the group have also given workshops and masterclasses for the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain and First National Flute Choir Day, as well as at universities and music colleges in the UK and USA, including the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, University of Southern California, UCLA and the Royal Academy of Music.Current projects include the launch of rarescale records (and two albums available on itunes and Amazon), a Gala Concert to celebrate the ensemble's 5th anniversary, and an improvisation project using live instruments, laptop and Wii remote controls.rarescale are holding a masterclass course for alto and bass flute players, bass clarinet and electronic composition on the Scottish Island of Raasay in Spring 2009.For further information please see our website at www.rarescale.org.uk
