About Me

First of all....I'm not a band. Although, I've played in bands, but at the moment I do less of this and more composing. I'm a student these days at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague.
In the last few years I've written quite a few new pieces. Most recently, I wrote a piece for the ASKO ensemble, it's track one. Other things of interest: last year I wrote an installation piece for 20 out-of-tune pianos, who would have thought, plus I've also been producing pieces for various colleagues and other small ensembles in the Netherlands and in Canada.
I now live in Holland, but before moving here I lived in Toronto. I worked with Toronto's Array Music, and was twice a resident composer at the Banff Centre for the Arts — also some people back home remember me being a guitarist and a vocalist in several bands. ("Springtime in Greenland" and my beguiling and rustic work as a singer/songwriter, "Graham Flett (county)".I am currently studying composition with Gilius van Bergeijk and Cornelis de Bondt. Before moving to Holland, I studied composition, among other things, at York University — influential teachers at this school included David Mott, Trichy Sankaran, Casey Sokol and James Tenney.

Music:

Band Website: grahamflett.ca
Band Members: Backslide Roller (2008). oboe, bass clarinet, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, viola and cello. ASKO ensemble: 9 x 7 project, April 2008. Muziekgebouw.
Latency 1,2,3. (2008) - a trio a three speeds... tonal music? It's an homage to Erik Satie where each person plays a part rather independently from the other. The result is a very complex type of tonal music. Performed by 3 great performers from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague.
Mount Demographic (2007): For 20 untuned pianos. A handful of composers and 14 volunteer piano players from Eindhoven.
A Maize in Frills (2008): For clarinet and mp3 player. The track is not quite set in stone and many variations exist on the mp3 player -- the performer then must navigate their way through the options that exist in the score. Performed by one willing and always delightful clarinetist.
verreire de vapeur - (2007) --- "The Melodica Quartet" --- set to scenes from Sergio Leone's film..."Once Upon a Time in the West". Why can't myspace recognize grave accents?Contradistinction - (2007): Written for and performed by the Python Saxophone Quartet. My somewhat ironic comment on Dutch saxophone music and the influence of my first composition teacher.

Influences: many things at the speed of sound....I promise, I'll fill this out someday...it's a long list though.
Type of Label: None

is the blue goo necessary?

No one taught me how to shave. My Dad, perhaps since I was the youngest of three boys, really never mentioned it. He did give me an electric razor though one he didn't need anymore. I shaved with it...
