I don't use MySpace very often - I prefer the layout of my own site: www.ryancarter.org (link to the left). However, I can post new recordings and information on upcoming performances more quickly here. About me (in the third person, as if someone else were writing this about me): Praised by the New York Times as "imaginative...like, say, a Martian dance party," Ryan Carter's music often explores interpersonal interactions and the impact of technology on the experience of music. Recent commissions have come from Carnegie Hall, Present Music and the Milwaukee Children’s Choir, the Calder Quartet, the Y Trio, and NOW Ensemble. Ryan’s music has recently been awarded the 2007 Lee Ettelson Award, a 2006 Creative Connections Award from Meet the Composer, the 2005 Aaron Copland Award, the Presidential Award from SUNY – Stony Brook, and two ASCAPlus Awards; Ryan was also a regional winner in the 2006 SCI/ASCAP Student Composition Commission Contest and one of the youngest finalists for the 2005 Gaudeamus Prize. Ryan has studied at Oberlin Conservatory, SUNY – Stony Brook, and at the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna. His primary teachers have included Pauline Oliveros, Richard Hoffmann, and Daniel Weymouth. During the 2007-8 academic year, Ryan studied with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Ryan is currently a MacCracken Fellow at New York University.
