About Me

With a sound that’s as swampy as snake oil, and as gritty as the cloud of dust hanging over a dry dirt road, MJD’s sweaty blues riffs pull you in like quicksand, while his steady driving beats hypnotize like tribal war drums, creating a juke joint trance that’s infectiously nasty. From barn-burning country bluegrass to delta blues, MJD’s stripped down roots music takes you back to where American music began, capturing the soul of the blues, the heart of country, and the attitude of punk-rock along the way.
MJD is a songwriter, and a storyteller, spinning yarns of tragedy and murder, of love lost and hope found, of hypocrisy and injustice, and of the desperation born of hard times. Representing the traditional music of poor Southerners, MJD‘s songs conjure images of abandoned shacks overrun with kudzu, beat-up pickup trucks barreling down back roads, old-time tent revivals, and run-down fish houses. From mournful tales of betrayal, to jubilant romps of musical debauchery, MJD’s songs all have one thing in common, the beat. Which is faithfully… Four on the floor, as the heavy foot of Mississippi John Doude pounds mercilessly in defiance against everything that has gone wrong with your week.
Following his debut solo release in 2007, on Blues Mutation Records, MJD has been touring the southeast, gathering momentum as his “anti-band”approach earns him the respect of seasoned musicians and party-goers alike. With full digital distribution, placement in local record outlets, growing radio support on SE college radio stations, and increasing satellite radio exposure, MJD continues to build a fan base across the SE, and beyond. Currently touring as a duo, with “Motor City Gomez” on the bass, MJD’s voodoo panther is gearing up to record a new cd, with a full tour and promotional support pending.
Growing up in Mississippi exposed John to a unique blend of music and culture, which reflects in his songs. From church, where his parents led the singing every time the doors were open, to the juke joints he would slip off to on the weekends, music was always his therapy, his escape. “I was actually forbidden from listening to blues, rock, and country by my family. That’s probably why I love them so much.”
A rebel from an early age, John continues to do things his own way. With a degree in Recording Industry from MTSU, he opted to start his own record label and recording studio. He now records and produced his own music, as well as others’, and is steadily developing a loyal underground following. With his unique songwriting style, and “do things my own way” attitude, he is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the up and coming artists to watch.
