Penny Metal is a DJ extraordinaire! Hmm so I am told... I play Mad Tunes - a quirky mix of Russian ska, punk and chanson, mixed up with the craziest Ukrainian wedding tunes, klezmer, Italian and Yugo trash - which have people laughing on the dance floor! As a Dj my mission has always been to take these tunes and play them to people who never get to hear them. I pop up all over the place and play my tunes to unsuspecting audiences with a cheeky smile and infectious enthusiasm. From nights such as 'Loss: a night of Exquisite Misery', to 'Rakehells' Revels' at the Cafe Royal in London, from Divan du Monde in Paris to SchliwoBeatz in Vienna, BalkanBeats and BalkanXPress to the Köpi and the MS Stubnitz in Germany, and birthday parties, squat parties, masked balls, art galleries and film launches - I'm there! Oh yes! And people love them! The vodka flows, arms flail and sweat pours from brows, and I get to witness some wild dancing techniques! Oi Oi Oi! Opa!
I have a monthly club night - Soviet Reunion - at the Cross Kings in Kings Cross on the 1st Saturday of each month. Mad Tunes abound to a back drop of Soviet posters of fish paste and shoe polish.
Have a listen to my weekly Mad Tunes Show on the internet radio station Wirelessfm (http://www.wirelessfm.net) where I play all sorts of weird and wonderful tunes from my vast collection of Eastern European music - all unpronouncable! Shows are available for download from the Wirelessfm Archive Forum....
I also compile Cds - Mad Tunes from around the World - tunes taken from my vinyl collection. These can be obtained from [email protected]. Price: £10. All proceeds go to charity.
