About Me

HELLO
from the author of
WAITING FOR CHRISTOPHER,
ROSEY IN THE PRESENT TENSE,
and
THE VANISHING POINT
I've published over a dozen books, mostly for young adults. You'll see the covers of some of them in the slide show below. If they're familiar and you loved one or two, I'd be thrilled to hear from you in my comments section!
What's new? Last year I published a picture book for the kid in you, Muti's Necklace, and out this spring was a collection of short stories for adults, Anteaters Don't Dream. (You can learn more about all these titles at amazon or on my other website.)
And finally, because writers are always most charged up about their current project, I want you fantasy fans to know I have a collection of dark (as in so dark, you'll have to feel your way through the pages!) fairy tales just out from Houghton Mifflin. Black Pearls, A Faerie Strand is illustrated, so all you GN afficianados will have some eye candy while you read :-)
Want to write yourself? Check out the ShopTalk link on my site, and however else you prep yourself for a career as an author, READ, READ, READ!

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

I live in North Carolina and teach in an MFA in Writing program in Vermont, so I'd love to hear from Tar Heel and Green Mountain folks. But truth be told, it matters less where you live than that you're a friend, a reader, and someone who walks your talk about peace, love and healing.

Behind the Cover

Myspace: Spawn of Satan?

VA TECH -- An Antidote

On the Bright Side...The other night I spoke to some three hundred people about writing. I didn't want this gig. For one thing, it was a freebie, a favor to my local bookstore and to my community. F...

A Dreamy Library...

In My Dream Library! In a galaxy far, far away, in my dream library, there would be NO age sections at all. Divisions, if any, would be by genre or content, not readership. Picture, if you will, an...

From the Shameless Promotion Department:

So the new book is just out! Anteaters Don't Dream and Other Stories is published by a literary (picture noses toward the ceiling and a mortar board on every editor's head) press, which means a micros...
