Defending A Choice for Women

About Me

I write the website snakegirl.net.

I make short, documentary videos on political and subcultural topics. So far these topics have included immigrant rights marches, roller derby girls, portraits of eccentric individuals, travels in India, pro-choice activism, and tattoo grrrls. I am an activist, an academic, and an obsessive documenter. I am interested in capturing the processes of justice for socially significant political movements-as well as the vivid flavor of underground cultures.
CURRENTLY, I am working on "Covered," a documentary about women and tattoos, including heavily tattooed women and the female tattoo artists. During the last two years I have been filming at tattoo conventions, shops, roller derby games, and whereever else tattooed women gather. After 60+ interviews with amazing women from across the country, I have finally started the editing process. This documentary brings together a community of tattooed women who discuss issues such as: identity, tattoo discrimination, working in the industry, family reactions, personal expression, and tattooed motherhood. I will continue to follow up with some of the participants, and am still open to include women with particularly compelling stories (women of color, gender-benders, lesbian parenting, tattooed professionals, breast cancer survivors, etc.).
Filming for women and tattoos led me straight to the roller derby track, and I became mesmerized with these tough, tattooed women. While the tattoo documentary will include a chapter about roller derby, I feel that the sport requires its own movie. Therefore I have started the initial filming for a future documentary about roller derby. Definitely drop me a line if you are interested, I am looking to film practices, bouts, community events, and the infamous partying.
