Coney Island Sound

Nautical By Nature

About Me

Coney Island Sound is a new project started by Ewan Gordon that mixes a variety of musical elements. A patchwork of found sounds and environmental recordings forms a backdrop for a variety of acoustic and vintage instruments. Accordions and Harps rub shoulders with Casios and Kaoss Pads. Acoustic guitars and unusual rhythm sources construct more familiar song structures. Friends from across the world contribute vocals and lyrics and allow songs to develop in all sorts of directions.
The music follows a more experimental direction and began alongside his endeavours with Olympic Lifts. It was whilst playing and DJing with the likes of Four Tet, Royksopp, Ladytron, Mina, Notwist, Lo-Fidelity Allstars and Ugly Duckling that he first started mixing environomental audio with folk elements collecting ideas on Dictaphone tapes.
Coney Island Sound’s first posting is Bring My Love’s Unwanted Arrows featuring a vocal from Bod of Fonda 500. It evolved from cutting together found Maori folk song records and is currently available on the acclaimed I Can Count Vol.2 compilation. The compilation recently featured on Huw Stephens and Rob Da Bank’s BBC Radio 1 shows and brings together a host of upcoming electronic talent.

Remixes Past ...... for Skint Records, Escalator Records Japan & Bungalow Records Berlin

Remixed by lovely folk including Cubismo Grafico, Jupiter Ace, Only Child & Ugly Duckling......

Lately!:
".......Using an array of synthetic instruments, keyboards, pianos, found sound, and a slew of guest vocals, Ewan is creating an awesome sound all his own. Sure comparisons can be made to practically anyone who uses those elements to make their own electronic type of music, but that seems to dim the creativity behind a project like Coney Island Sound....."-Pop Tarts Suck Toasted NYC Band of the Week

Latest news April ’08:Debut Single on the Way!

The beautifully formed Regular Beat Recording Company in Liverpool have seen some form of method in my madness and are to release my first 7 inch.
There will be 500 copies which will include a range of limited handmade mix CDs with seasonal themes including elements of recent field recordings and the odd found tape or two in the mix.

The first single will provisionally be released early August with another to follow in October and a mini album before the end of the year. We’ll be continuing with the mix of instrumental tracks and vocal contributions and who knows maybe some remixes later in the year.

The physical releases will be available from the usual major retailers worldwide and good independent stores like Rough Trade shops, Norman Records, Linus and hopefully other retailers in Japan and Puregroove in the U.K.. There will also be an accompanying digital release.

Exciting times and between now and the end of the summer i’ll be in the Studio finishing additional tracks for a full album.

Much Love From The Island

The Wonderful I Can Count Records’ Second Compilation (Released Jul ’07):

".....The high points are high: the lackadaisical charm of ‘Bring Me Loves Unwanted Arrow’ by Coney Island Sound reminds you of why you need to book that holiday you’ve needed for a long, long time........"

3 Bar Fire, July 2007

"...Coney Island Sound blend their sounds with acoustic dreams and layers of harmonies, but there’s still time for a flicker of programming along the way.....I Can Count never go for the conventional and it’s so easy these days for anyone to knock out a compilation of trendy sounds. ICC however have gone that extra mile and plucked out total unknowns who are striving to muck around with the electronic genre and to push out into new frontiers. It’s a wonderful piece of work that brings a dozen new and interesting acts onto your record player....."

Manchester Music Review July 2007

".....The beauty of ‘Volume 2’ is I Can Count’s prophetic musical vision and staggering ability at picking unparalleled tracks to showcase, from the UK as well as America. Add to that a diverse and constantly changing track-list as well as using artists either signed or otherwise and you have all the characteristics of an almost perfect home made mix tape......"

Gigwise Review July 2007

"............The mathematically astute I Can Count label has a finely tuned ear for home made pop and design. Think of an early Mute/Rough Trade version of Kitsuné that’s looking for the next Hot Chip. You get the feeling Peel would love to be introducing these bands in his sarcastic way, “don’t know anything about Coney Island Sound, are they from Norwich?”.................but there are a few diverse standout tracks. Like ‘Bring My Love’s Unwanted Arrow’ with a very mellow Tunng feel to it.............."

FLY Review July 2007

"......Slowing down proceedings even more are Coney Island Sound with their sedated and vintage patchwork of sounds throughout ‘Bring My Loves Unwanted Arrow’(vocals courtesy of Fonda 500’s Bod).......an irresistible collection of some the best in home-grown raw talent and refreshing to hear music for music’s sake by those in the know and more importantly who give a shit. Whether you’re an electro connoisseur or simply a curious novice, I Can Count ‘Volume 2’ is saturated with electronica in all its forms and is a good a place as any to start exploring."

Entertainment Wise Review July 2007

Featuring Sportsday Megaphone, Miss Odd Kid, Mr. Beasley, Spaceships Are Cool & of course Me!

And Manchester’s rather tasty Kipper Records.

Catch of the Day Vol.3 (Released March ’08):

Kipper Records Coney Island Sound Page

"Kipper Records are back with another example of the ultimate DIY record. Proper on-body printing on CDRs, superb artwork, an inner colour sleeve, a corrugated printed outer cover and a special stamped brown paper bag (pictured). A superb use of the often clinical CD format. This attention to detail is also reflected in Kippers choice of songs."

"Coney Island Sound bring forth nautical themes as horns and strings all stir up visions of plain sailing, lashing waves and life at sea."

"mind-blowingly good"
