AENGUS Ó MAOLÃINIrish singer and composer AENGUS Ó MAOLÃIN (pronounced Ehngus Oh Mwaylawn) was born in 1985 and has studied at Trinity College Dublin, the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
Aengus has been a member of the world-famous vocal group Anúna since 2003 and has been featured as a soloist on 2006's sublime Sensation and 2007's US release Celtic Origins. In autumn 2007 he is touring the US with the PBS supported Anúna: Celtic Origins tour.
Self trained in multiple styles and traditions of world vocal technique Aengus founded Bulraga, a four voice group in 2004 to explore the interplay between these styles and the group's output, featuring mainly Aengus' compositions, has been described as "Agonizingly powerful" and "Breathtakingly chaotic… run of the mill is not what Bulraga are about." His composition has won him commissions from the likes of The Printing House Festival of New Music, the Royal Irish Academy of Music Percussion Ensemble, Christchurch Cathedral Choir and private sponsors as well as the Arts Council of Ireland. Aengus' choral music is gaining in popularity in the United Kingdom and future performances are planned for the US, Canada, mainland Europe and New Zealand.
Aengus has an artistic relationship with Painted Filly Theatre (Dublin and San Francisco) and in 2005 was commissioned to write a ten-minute play for ten actors by the company. The result, A Song About Boris Borg was the stand-out piece of Painted Filly’s Season and received five-star reviews in The Irish Times, Independent, Evening Herald and Irish Theatre Magazine. In 2007 Aengus’ music for Jesse Weaver’s The Biography of Bernie Ward was a vital part of the production. Next year dramatic projects will include Tree Story, a film score for Pete Moles, and work with Rough Magic Theatre’s Seeds project for emerging artists of merit.
