The beer to have when you’re having more than one

About Me

It's been a long ride. One crazy trip indeed. You most likely dont know me, well you should, I was probably your dad's beer back when he was knocking your mom up in the summer of love or on a massive coke binge during the 80's when things hit the fan on the street. Yeah I was the one soothing your grandpa's soul after he got done saving everyones ass back during World War II. Yeah and I was there when the Yankees won everything, no not these 3 or 4 dinky little titles, but the time when they won for decades in a row. I was the one in the tubs filled of ice during hot summer backyard cookouts. I had it all man, but where did it all go wrong? Let me begin by telling you a little about myself.I was the longest operating brewery in New York City, and last operating brewery in New York City (as of 1976), and America's oldest lager beer brewing company these honors, plus many others, all belong to The F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Co. aka "the Schaef" me. In 1938 I joined that exclusive group of brewers that sold 1,000,000 barrels in a year, and the 2,000,000 mark was passed in 1944, two years after the company celebrated its 100th birthday in 1842. Sales continued strong throughout the 1940's and, to increase capacity, Schaefer purchased the former Beverwyck Brewery Co. in Albany, New York in 1950. Things were going real good money was coming in hand over first. We remained a two-plant company until 1961 when, with an eye toward expanding into large areas of the mid-west, Rudy Schaefer purchased the Standard Brewing Company, of Cleveland, Ohio. This is when things first started to go wrong. We started expanding going nuts, not smart. Than in the 1970's I started taking on the big boy himself Budweiser, it wasnt smart, but hey go big or go home. So we entered into the ad wars with Budweiser with a poor marketing vision, and we got our ass hand to us. Some say I overreached, but hey I am the Schaef . After that peoples tastes started to change, they started lookings towards Coors, Miller, Bud,Heineken, etc. After that, things started spinning out of control, and than in 1981 my buddy Stroh's Brewing Company came in and bought us up, things were looking good there for awhile, but not for long. Then in the 1990's everyone started drinking micro this and micro that, I was like WTF? I'm the Schaef, I got more personality in my tab than this beers have in their whole can. My buddy Strohs and I were in trouble in a big way, well in 1999 Pabst came to the rescue bought us and started having Miller make us. Don't worry ,I'm back, it's been one hell of a ride. Drink me before Pabst decides to kick my ass to the curb, they have always been jealous of me, after all I'm the oldest brew around, and I have more street cred then them.Read my full bio at http://www.beerhistory.com/library/holdings/schaefer_anderso n.shtml..This profile was edited with Thomas' myspace editor™ V2.5
