'SICK! SICK! SICK!' It was pretty rad having QUEENS OF THE STONEAGE, AIR
afterparty here at Ding Dong recently...With the success of Cherry (Melbourne's first CBD rock'n'roll bar) comes The Ding Dong Lounge - the sister bar to New York City's very own of the same name. The Ding Dong Lounge is filling the void in Melbourne's rock'n'roll scene - sure we got the venues and plenty of bands that want the limelight, but now comes a mid-sized venue that can be your after work drinking hole or a place to see some of the scene's best local and international bands. The Ding Dong Lounge is nestled in the centre of Chinatown, but never before has a rock bar existed on this strip. The emphasis is on good music, definitely no electronica and stars a host of young DJs spinning the decks with everything from The Ramones, Television, T-Rex, The Runaways, AC/DC, Turbonegro, Iggy & The Stooges and a stack more vintage and contemporary rock to salute you.According to one of the bar's owners Bill Walsh, Cherry has outgrown its capacity to cater for its rock'n'roll crowd - there's just too many thirsty rock pigs wanting to pack the one den. But now its surrogate sister on the block, The Ding Dong Lounge, has joined the stable to lend a hand. "Instead of waiting for someone else to open up another rock bar we thought we would do it," says Walsh.Rock'n'roll has stomped all over LA's Sunset Strip and New York's Bowery and East Village for decades. It's indeed obvious that rock fans in Melbourne have craved a similar social set-up - a hangout that exists outside of pubs and extends beyond alternative radio stations. Ding Dong isn't claiming to rewrite history and it doesn't preach to be the new cool - it's simply a venue that's helping keep rock where it needs to be. "We have identified a need in Melbourne for a larger rock'n'roll bar which encompasses all things Cherry including good drinks, friendly staff and great music. All this will be prevalent at the Ding Dong Lounge," says Walsh. The Ding Dong Lounge in New York City is a dimly lit bar, decorated in band posters, cuckoo clocks, cosy corners and a spacious dancing area. Beer is poured from taps that are made from used guitar and bass necks. Bands that have played there include the Demolition Doll Rods, Cosmic Psychos, The Real Kids and the Lyres.
CLICK ON KASHMIRAccording to Steve Naidich, who owns Ding Dong New York with partner Bill Nolan, their bar is one of a last dying breed in the city. "It's really old school New York - people in the know, "know". There are no neon signs outside, there's no advertising, and no fanfare. But once you've found it, you're back every night, you're telling everybody you know about it. That's what keeps people coming back."
Walsh was approached by his New York friends Bill Nolan and Steve Naidich to open a sister bar in Australia - they chose Melbourne because it is driven by the same sophisticated rock appreciation that NYC is renowned for. "We liked the New York connection because of the similarities in good music, they are both stylish cities and people in both places have a similar taste in this kind of venue," says Walsh. "The Ding Dong Lounge in the two greatest cities on the planet? What's not to like? But not sure that we like the idea of putting vegemite in the Bloody Mary's," says Naidich. "We're working on a Ding Dong Bagdad!!"The concept of a rock bar is just that, a concept to many fly-by-night opportunists, but the Ding Dong is something more than a concept. "There will always be a need for the counter-culture place to be subverse and rock out," says Naidich. "It's punk versus disco. The real trend in NYC right now is the fancy lounge. But there's something phoney, fly-by-night about these places. They're not going to be around in five years." "There's so many electronic lounge bars in Melbourne," adds Walsh.

SKYBOMBERS - ALBUM LAUNCH
FRIDAY 6TH JUNE 8PM/$15 Selling fast!

It’s been an incredible year for the Skybombers, having signed with 'Albert Music' (home to AC/DC & The Easybeats) things have sky-rocketed ever since, including being invited to perform at Musexpo 2007 in Los Angeles. The band performed to a packed house at The Roxy Theatre and as good luck would have it, some heavyweights at uber-cool LA alternative station Indie 103.1 were in the crowd, adding the band’s demo to high rotation & were asked to return in the US summer for some exclusive radio shows. Further radio adds across the country and the band secured US management via the highly respected Gold Mountain Entertainment (Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys) and agency representation via The Agency Group. In October “It Goes Off” was licensed to Tennis Australia as the official song for the Australian Grand Slam Tennis Open which has been featured in all TV, radio and online marketing campaigns. Following some more successful touring back in their homeland, the Skybombers have just completed recording their debut album at The Sandbox in LA with producer Rick Parker (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club; The Von Bondies; The Dandy Warhols). This presently untitled album is a killer and perfectly captures what the Skybombers are all about – being young and having a good time in the city. It’s twelve songs of high energy, carefree rock and roll that borrows as much from the sixties garage bands as it does point to the future. It’s fast, it’s fun, it’s feverish...with YOUNG LOVERS, THE HILLS, SMALL AFFAIRS. www.myspace.com/skybombers

DUKES OF WINDSOR - SINGLE TOUR!
SATURDAY 7TH JUNE 8PM/$12

Channel V/Faster Louder/New World Artists present...Dukes of Windsor - 'It's a War' Single Tour! Dukes of Windsor found their first incarnation when Jack Weaving (vocals) and Cory Blight (drums/engineer/producer) spent several months writing songs in 2005. They soon enlisted Scott Targett (keyboard), Oscar Dawson (guitar), Joe Franklin (bass), and Dukes of Windsor were born. The band have just returned from the depths of the Arctic winter, where they recorded their second album at Tonteknik Studios, a former lunatic asylum in Umeå, Sweden. The isolated, sub-zero surrounds captured and moulded the bands distinctive, high-energy sound. Produced by Pelle Henriccsson and Eskil Lövström (Refused; The Shape of Punk to Come), the album is aptly titled Minus and is set for a release mid-2008. The boys will be on the road nationally throughout June in support of the first single, ‘It’s A War’, which hits the stores May 17. SNOB SCRILLA (USA/SYD)
WEDNESDAY 11TH JUNE 8PM/$8

In the outer planetary underground of tomorrow’s yesterday, the Alien-Nation is preparing to go to war with the powers that be to decide who will control the soundscape of the universe. No longer content to exist on obscure planets the Alien-Nation found a voice of true freshness to rally behind in an unlikely hero, a human they call Snob Scrilla and a group of producers known only as the Blueberry Think Tank. Incorporating the cutting edge grunge of indie rock, the rhymes of conscious hip-hop, and synths reminiscent of the 80’s, Snob Scrilla and the Blueberry Think Tank have broken all the rules which have been enforced by the power for so long creating a completely new sound that refuses to be pigeon holed or typecast. Having travelled to the far reaches of the universe gathering the essence of the dopest MC, the knowledge of the paramount drum, and the most advanced synth technology, all that remains is the final element of the Alien-Nation’s plan…a powerful alliance from within the power, who will be willing to help Snob Scrilla and the Blueberry Think Tank reclaim the attention of the youth and redefine the sound of music. The stage is set for the first wave of the attack to start on Earth where there have been reports of youth who feel like they simply don’t fit in, youth who don’t identify with the clichés and typecasts of genres perpetuated by the power, and youth who are ready to join the ranks of the Alien-Nation. The only question remains…who among the power will answer the call? The movement has arrived… The lines have been drawn…The time for talk is over...Day One is here. Supported by MELODICS, POLO CLUB, BOSTON SOLAR, & DJ JOELISTICS (TZU). www.myspace.com/snobscrilla

SATURDAY 14TH JUNE 8PM/$10

Spencer P. Jones - not only someone with a string of solo albums under his belt but over the past 20 years or so Spencer has been a constant in the Australian music scene, from early obscure inner city scufflings with THE EMOTIONAL RETARDS and CUBAN HEELS, to the hilarious psychedelic cabaret of THE NORTH 2 ALASKANS and the gold status cowpunk incontinence of THE JOHNNYS. Spencer is more widely know as a founding member / guitarist with THE BEASTS OF BOURBON. He has also worked as guitarist sideman to PAUL KELLY, LYDIA LUNCH, ANDRE WILLIAMS, JEFFREY LEE PIERCE'S GUN CLUB, THE SAINTS'CHRIS BAILEY, The LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY, SHOTGUN RATIONALE, RENEE GEYER, The SAILORS, The VIOLENT FEMMES and many others, not to mention his own solo-project bands, SPENCER P. JONES & THE ESCAPE COMMITTEE, COW PENALTY and SPENCER P. JONES AND THE LAST GASP. 2003 saw the release of the highly acclaimed album, "Fait Accompli", 2006 "Immolation And Ameliorations" and this year's standout "Fugitive Songs" released via Spooky Records in Australia, and BANG! records in Spain. MARY TREMBLES (QLD) - ALBUM LAUNCH
FRIDAY 20TH JUNE 8PM/$10

MARY TREMBLES combine sparseness with menacing intensity and melodic pop hooks. The Brisbane based 3 piece was actually born in LA. Founding member and principal songwriter Skritch (Tex Perkins' Dark Horses, Gota Cola) was chatting with Damon Cox (Intercooler) over drinks at The Viper Room after an Intercooler show (Skritch was on live sound duties for Intercooler on their US tour). Both agreed they needed an additional creative outlet and Skritch had a swag of songs which were screaming to be heard. Upon their return to Brisbane they called upon longtime friend Duey Coert (recently replaced by Tanzie) and the line-up was complete. MARY TREMBLES completed a 7 song mini-album entitled ‘ps...situation’ which was released in June 2006 on Plus One Records & have played with the likes of Urge Overkill (US), Dinosaur Jr (US), Datarock (Norway), Regurgitator, Beasts Of Bourbon and The Mess Hall, and 2007 Big Day Out. The band also played at the 2007 CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, as well as shows in LA, the UK and Singapore. Their first full-length album is recorded and is currently being mixed in the US by Mike Major (At The Drive-In, Sparta). MARY TREMBLES have built a strong reputation for their dynamic live shows - catch them launch the Album at Ding Dong this June supported by GRAND FATAL (SYD), RUSSIAN ROULETTES (feat. members of LEGENDS OF MOTORSPORT, KAMIKAZE TRIO, SPECIMENS). www.myspace.com/marytrembles

HUGO RACE & THE TRUE SPIRIT
THURSDAY 26TH JUNE 8PM

A prolific and visionary artist, originally from Melbourne, singer/guitarist, producer, performer and songwriter, Hugo Race was introduced to the international stage as a teenage founding member and powerful transient element of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds (1983), (apprearing on six cds of the Seed’s catalogue ). He then founded The Wreckery (1985) who went on to become one of Australia’s seminal garage-blues cult bands of the ‘80s. He then moved to Berlin to form 'Hugo Race & The True Spirit', conceived as a collective more than a band - following a personal musical vision in a series of mutating line-ups that have fused the boundaries between the "primal" (roots) blues and raw electronica - described by London Sounds as "night music of the soul", and by Melody Maker as "industrial-trance-blues". With a deep serious voice somewhere between Mark Lanegan, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Stuart Staples, his albums are remarkable in every sense. His new album "Taoist Priests" is out now through Spooky Records. Catch Hugo this June at the Ding Dong Lounge when he returns from Berlin for a VERY, special first show back indeed... www.myspace.com/hugoraceandthetruespirit

BUSHIDO / SLEEP PARADE
FRIDAY 27TH JUNE 8PM/$15

Two of Melbourne’s premier progressive rock acts, Bushido and Sleep Parade are teaming up to share the stage on a double bill East Coast tour in late June and July. Proudly presented by Oz Prog.com the tour is to take in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Wollongong, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast. Having last come off East Coast tours with Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus and releasing the acclaimed Eye Of The Storm single(MGM), late last year, Bushido have recently been busy wrapping up preproduction for their debut album, due for release later this year. This is the bands first set of shows since three recent preview gigs with Many Machines on Nine, and they are busting at the seams to get some of the new songs into the wider live arena. If recent responses to new tracks are any indication, add to this the intensity of the band’s excitement to showcase some more and this tour promises big things for punters! Sleep Parade's debut album Things Can Always Change (Shock) released just last month, has impressed fans and critics alike with its sonic beauty as well as its complex arrangements, whilst not losing the essence of great songs. Reviews of the album have been outstanding. Sleep Parade toured in March Nationally with progressive Rock-legends Porcupine Tree (UK), they are currently on a 3 week leg of the COG 'Sharing Space' album tour and come straight off that into this run. Expect them firing for this set of shows. The 1st single Carry On has received radio play nationally through JJJ and Commercial radio. ROWLAND S. HOWARD
FRIDAY 4TH JULY 8PM/$12

Rowland will be playing further 'exclusive' shows at Ding Dong over the next couple of months before going into the studio to record his new album!! Australian legendary rock musician, guitarist and songwriter, is best known as a member of Melbourne's 70/80's new wave band BOYS NEXT DOOR (Nick Cave), & Howard received international acclaim for writing underground hit, the ballad "Shivers". When the band evolved into THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, Howard's aggressive use of distortion and audio feedback was one distinctive element in the group's "assault" on their audience. The Birthday Party relocated to Germany in 1982, where they became a progressively experimental group, in part due to their art rock leanings, which were developed in the band's formative years. He then went on to form many ohter bands/& projects since including his collaborations with Lydia Lunch and Nikki Sudden, & indie band These Immortal Souls, based in Europe and active through the late 1980s and early 1990s. Currently, Rowland S. Howard lives in Melbourne, Australia and produces and performs occasionally, to the delight of a small, self-renewing audience who consider Howard to be a member of Australian underground rock royalty. With special guest JAMES CRUICKSHANK (THE CRUEL SEA). www.myspace.com/rowlandshoward

ANGELA'S DISH
FRIDAY 11TH JULY 8PM

With a catalogue of three EP’s under their belt, the long awaited debut LP, 'War On Time' lives up to its name as the band antagonises the digital generation’s obsession with ‘The Single’ by meticulously creating a stunning narrative whole. Originally from NSW, the brotherly song writing duo play an epic melodic-rock sound in the vein of Jimmy Eat World, the band was hailed for it’s intense, endearing chord progressions and memorable melodies. Working with ARIA ‘Producer of the Year’ David Nicholas (Elton John, INXS, Midnight Oil) as well as US Producer Mark Needham (The Killers, My Chemical Romance), the band underwent an intense, fine-tuned recording process. The album follows the successful release of lead-single Soft November, a driving, eclectic track that debuted at 1 on the AIR charts and peaked at 1 on Channel [V]’s most requested clips. Angeals Dish also made a considerable impact online, earning 4 in the Myspace Most Watched Videos of 2007, with over two million views. War On Time offers an endearing theme, its narrative freely moving through the timeline of a modern romance. Supported by THE SUNDANCE KIDS, ARMEN FIRMEN. www.myspace.com/angelasdish

HELL CITY GLAMOURS (SYD) - ALBUM LAUNCH
FRIDAY 18TH JULY 8PM/$10

It’s taken six years, countless hours in vans, hundreds of shows allover Australia, playing to everyone from a solitary bargirl to supporting thelikes of Paul Stanley, Alice Cooper, Airbourne and New York Dolls…. It’s been a hard (well mostly hard) slog, but now the time has finally come…The dust has settled in the studio and with their debut album ready to go, Hell City Glamours are stepping to the plate, delivering thirteen tracks of unbridled, distinctly Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll. Dripping with the passion of four guys making music for the love of it, their veins injected with the influence of decades of AC/DC, Black Crowes, Hellacopters, Thin Lizzy, Rancid, Chuck Berry and a myriad of others in between. Hell City Glamours self titled album is their defining moment, an album that truly places their stamp on rock today, solidifying their place in the Aussie rock pantheon. Bearing homage to the past while defining rock n roll for 2008 and beyond No hair-metal histrionics, no sunset strip rehashes, no retro-rock bullshit. This is simply Hell City Glamours...Supported by THE DEVILROCK FOUR, THE LIGHTNING STRIKES. www.myspace.com/hellcityglamours
