Nhambuzim - Brazilian Music

About Me

Nhambuzim é, enfim, um grupo de música brasileira, e sublinha toda a vastidão que o termo abraça.**************************************************** **********The writings of João Guimarães Rosa are the impulse behind the Paisagem Cantada project. His masterpieces became songs and are retold by Nhambuzim in a sonority that challenges classifications: they evoke the sounds of the hinterland of Minas Gerais – where the author was born – launching a new look to the abundant well where Brazilian musical identity is recreated every day. This is also a way to exalt the memory of this great master of Brazilian literature in a very special year when the 50 years of the publication of Grande Sertão: Veredas and the 60 years of Corpo de Baile (series of books that include Manuelzão e Miguilim), as well as the 60 years of publication of Sagarana, are celebrated. 2006 is, definitely, the year of Guimarães Rosa. The Paisagem Cantada project came up along with Nhambuzim on June 2002. On 2003, the group started presenting concerts in several places in São Paulo and, on the same year, the project’s songs won the Nascente/USP award (given by the University of São Paulo), under Popular Music category. On the following year, the group participated in the Fórum Cultural Mundial at SESC branches around São Paulo and started presenting in several cities in Minas Gerais. With this project, Nhambuzim looks forward to narrow the distance between literary art and the audience. Having in mind that music has the power of enchanting ears and emotions, the group has got a powerful resource at its disposal to light at the future reader a curiosity sparkle about João Guimarães Rosa’s work.In Nhambuzim music, the musical traditions of Northern Minas Gerais are just the starting point. They are outfit by a new sonority, strongly supported by the voices arrangements and the intense dialogue built between them and the instruments. A dialogue that also brings the urban references, carried by each member of the group, as well as the archaic resources that interpose the musical speech. Finally, Nhambuzim is a group of Brazilian popular music, and points out all the vastness embraced by whatever this label means.

Sounds Like: Nhambuzim was born in São Paulo in June 2002, from the meeting of three friends who decided to tell, through music, the stories created by the writer João Guimarães Rosa. His writings, though, are just the initial impulse for a group that looks for the universal sources that for centuries has walked along with Brazilian traditional culture. More than a country, Brazil is a whole universe. With Nhambuzim, it sings in multiple voices. But Nhambuzim is not only a vocal group. The voices here weave a deep dialog with the instruments. It embraces not only the regionalism, but also the urban sources brought by each of Nhambuzim's musicians, as well as the archaic sources that interpose the Brazilian musical discourse. Finally, Nhambuzim is a group of Brazilian music, and it goes through it completely.
