music, strange animals, wilderness, art, film, being outside, saving some world for later...
I've met most of the people that would have gone on this list, and the ones who I haven't met I will never meet because they are dead.
Oh the list is long... For starters, irr.app.(ext.), Current 93, Nurse With Wound, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Faun Fables, Andrew Chalk, Mirror, Cowboy Junkies, N.W.O.B.H.M., Celtic Frost, Sol Invictus, Pantaleimon, Om, Amebix, eX-Girl, scandinavian folk, Tuvan folk, folk folk, anything sad, downright maudlin, or beyond human comprehension, Silver Mt. Zion, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Circle, Kemialliset Ystavat, Karl Blake in all of his various guises, Simon Finn, Bohren and der Club of Gore, Pearls Before Swine, Eleni Karaindrou, Shirley Collins, June Tabor, Meira Asher, Rube Waddell, Lhasa de Sela, Lila Downs, Sally Doherty, Aranos, Neurosis and related, Swans and related, Rudimentary Peni, In Gowan Ring, Greg Weeks, Kathleen Yearwood, Gilman St. Punks, much of the East Bay weirdo rock scene, Tenhi, Paul Chain, Fado, Jesse Sykes, banjos, string sections, broken trumpets, washboards, shuffling rhythms, made-up languages, cinematic strings, Goblin, Mihaly Vig, Popol Vuh, Comus, Manilla Road, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Timothy Renner and Stone Breath, Oh dear I don't know when to shut up...
Anything directed by Bela Tarr, Andrei Tarkovsky, Werner Herzog, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Dario Argento, Vincent Ward, Philip Ridley... I prefer tragedy to comedy, although comedy is fine if it is upsetting in some way. Black and white films in languages I don't understand are okay by me. Hollywood films are enjoyable in much the same way a rollercoaster is - a fun time but ultimately forgettable.
Occasionally after the fact on DVD. Otherwise, I consider it a worthless time suck.
Thomas Ligotti, Edward Abbey, Joe R. Lansdale (His Ownself), Algernon Blackwood, William Hope Hodgson, Arthur Machen, Charles De Lint, Louis De Bernieres, Richard Adams, Lovecraft, Poe, Alan Dean Foster, Ayun Halliday, F. Paul Wilson, M.R. James, Muriel Gray, Mary Doria Russell, Michael Slade, Philip Pullman, Lord Dunsany, Michael Slade, S.P. Somtow... I wish I had more time to read. Gone are the days when I can read all night and be brought back to reality by the dawn.
Anybody who says, "hey, this ain't right!" and actually does something about it.
