Nipper, the WDVX microphone is a hero of sorts-the microphone that has become an icon at WDVX is an RCA type-77 DX Polydirectional Velocity Unit that I'm told lived it's previous life in an armed forces radio station in Anchorage Alaska in the 1950 & '60s until it was surplused out. These microphones became a main staple in most radio & TV studios in this era because of the warm sound they present to acoustic music and the human voice. This is achieved by suspending an aluminum corrugated 1/8" wide ribbon across a gap of very strong field magnet, that generates an electrical audio signal as sound waves travel through the assembly; hence the term velocity (ribbon) microphone.Sarah and Maybelle Carter.. width="425" height="350" ....
