GEKKO’S meteoric rise has taken them from Stevenage heroes to becoming one of the most promising unsigned bands. Now they’re aiming to take it to the next step.
The band’s energetic three-piece dynamic was heavily influenced by the timeless prog-rock of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, the poppy post-punk of The Police, and the respective rough and smooth of classic songsmiths Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. This formed the basis for their psychedelic funk rock sound.
Their first gig was a real baptism of fire - playing to 250 people at the famous Knebworth Park in 2000. They were performing for Lord Cobbold just a year after forming and winning an unsigned band competition.
On top of over 150 indoor gigs, they have also played at a number of summer festivals. After headlining Stevenage's Rock in the Park 2007 & 2006, Mayfest (one of NME’s top ten festivals), Togfest in June 2005, Rhythms of the World and this year's Muswell Hill Festival - playing to around 10,000 music lovers. They have also had successful back-to-back sets in the unsigned tent of last August’s Bulldog Bash 2007- the biggest Hells’ Angels festival in Europe, 2007 Muswell Hill Music Festival
Previous shows also include support slots to indie stars The Subways, R&B rocker Wilco Johnson and, more recently, signed metal rock bands such a Kyrbgrinder, BiTune and Vera Cruz.
Now GEKKO are looking to take it on to the next level in the hunt for a publishing deal to put their stuff out there and see if fans enjoy their sound at home as much as they do live. They are also filming their first music video to enable gig slots at huge festivals like T in the Park. Under new managment, new photoshoots, band profile video and breaking into the London Circuit sparking exciting times for Gekko. Stay in touch!
