Tim Brickley and The Bleeding Hearts

About Me

Hola. My name is Tim Brickley. I live in work in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Bleeding Hearts is the name of the musical collective I've established to play and record my songs, most of which are written with my songwriting partner David Rheins, who lives in Manhattan. We've got two albums out: "Be apart." (1995) and "Everything that ever was." (2005). We'll continue to post various tracks here, and you like what you hear, please visit the website, timbrickley.com, to purchase the discs - we'd love to be able to afford ro record the next one (or twelve). I sing and play guitar, piano, bass, a little drums and violin. I am a producer/engineer as well and have been a principal in a studio in Indianapolis called Hit City Recording since the mid-80's. I was fortunate to meet Paul Z. and Tufty back then, and learned how to engineer by - among other things - tracking some Zero Boys vocals, and recorded the whole Toxic Reasons "Kill By Remote Control" record. Lately I've produced albums for danny flanigan and the Rain Chorus and Rosetta Pebble, and recorded some groovy tracks for Amy Lashley that you can check out here on MySpace. Some amazing musicians are in the extended Bleeding Hearts family. (By the way, there is an English band called the Bleeding Hearts, and some dude in Chicago has the name trademarked, but I've kept it because I like it.) The first lineup, early 90's - was Jeff Chapin on drums, Bill Moss on bass and John McCool on lead guitar. My old friend and guitar-wiz John Byrne first joined in '93 or so. That's the lineup that recorded "Be apart.", which was mixed by Jon Quest. McCool split for cycling on Colorado (where are you, John?) I started my long association with the amazing Kevin Anker on keyboards. Glenn Hopkins played drums for a fun-filled time, then Steve Prince. With Tad Armstrong on bass, I remember we played the Philadelphia Music Conference at the Sam Adams Brewpub 10/95. It gets fuzzy for awhile, I play jazz too, concentrated on that for a few years, and studio stuff - I've composed and produced lots of broadcast music through the years, stuff for our PBS outlet, etc. I actually won an Emmy Award for a documentary score in 1998. Jerry Springer gave it to me at a big dinner in Cleveland. It was cool, my folks and my brother and my colleague Scott Sanders and his wife Veronica were there. In 2000, we got a revamped version of the band going with Sam Withrow on drums, Kyle Kegerreis on bass, Jeff DeHerdt on piano and John B. on guitar. At some point, Ben Wah Salami joined the band on vocals/tambourine/atmosphere. Mark Kocher took over on bass when Kyle moved to Nashville, and Jeff D. started his family and started putting out his own great music. Wade Parish started playing drums, James Monaldi joined on guitar. That become the core that started work on "Everything", which took a few years of off-and-on work, and ended up being mixed by - in the great freaky circle of it all - Paul. James moved to California, and the fabulous David England from Bloomington played guitar for awhile, before forming the Benders w/ Tad to record play their great songs. The current lineup is: Robin (Steele) Reuter on drums, Dr. Tom Waldo on bass, Larry DeMyer on guitar, Kevin on piano and Ben Wah singing. The lovely and talented Lacy Comstock - whose lovely vocals grace "Everything" has moved to Florida for a while, so we need a new great female singer if you know - or are - one.As you can tell by the name of the band, I'm progressive politically. I think this current Administration is doing everything wrong, and I don't like what this country's becoming and where it looks like we are going. We need to get back to being a part of the world community, back to the progressive values of tolerance, fairness and decency that once made us a beacon of hope - not bogged down in torture camps, spying on peace groups, and living in a perpetual state of war and fear. I'm trying to get more involved, trying to give what little I can to groups trying to fight the good fight. And then to do what little I can through rock and roll. Hit City continues to be a great resource for young bands to get started making decent recordings. That's what true rock and roll is about for me, not the bucks and the bizness and the bullshit - but doing your own little part for Liberation.Hope to get the band out playing again regularly, and I hope I see you all soon. Music:

Band Website: timbrickley.com
Band Members: Robin Reuter on drums, Tom Waldo is on sabbatical in the north of Italy right now, so the talented Mr. Scott Sanders is on bass (ably subbed by the talented Mr. Randall Earl King when The Reacharounds are gigging.) Larry DeMyer on guitar, James Monaldi on guitar, Ben Wah Salami on ?, and TB on guitar and piano. Here's a bit of info on our new "Snocap" store where you can download our music. It's fun, safe and easy! The company is co-founded by the Napster fellow, Shawn Fanning, and is a great resource for indie artists to sell their wares. I'll expand upon this later, but for now - click to the left of each of our albums listed ("Everything that ever was." and "Be apart.") to see the individual tracks - you get a bit of a price break if you buy the collection, but can get them one by one as well. The tracks below the albums are from my deluxe, 4 CD set called "Local artist.", which is a very limited-edition retrospective of my various musical phases (alternate title - "If a career fell in the forest....") At some point, as the store develops, I'll bundle them into album format as well. In the meantime, I'll send an actual CD to anyone who buys one of the full e-albums, just send me an e-mail! Track info: * To shore (or out to sea).: haunting folk ballad about love, forgiveness and letting go. From a live radio broadcast, duo w/ Randall Earl King on lead guitar. * Nocturne # 3 (in Dm).: solo piano piece performed by my wonderful Chilean pianist friend Roberto Monsalve. It's an excerpt from a longer orchestral piece I composed. This excerpt was used in a Phoenix Theatre production of a very interesting play by Tony McDonald, "Savant". Recorded at Hit City, when we still had the beautiful old Steinway from Rick's Cafe Americain.... * Glass stations. (Alternate version): it's the one up here on the MySpace player. With Jeff Chapin on drums, John Byrne on lead guitar, and me on the rest. Chip Matthews engineered the fab-sounding drum tracks. This one rocks rather well. * Long distance love.: once again, from a live radio broadcast, this time duo w/ J. Byrne on acoustic slide, and Randall Earl and Hit City founder emeritus Dave Langfitt on backing vocals (and w/ Randy shaking his car keys as percussion, the wily old veteran...) * I used to know.: one of the earlier songs written w/ my long-time friend/collaborator David Rheins. He was - and is - so wise beyond his years. It took us a few years of life's rich tumble to add the second verse. Paul Mahern helped me record the acoustic guitars, and suggested breaking the part up into the beautifully-interlocking cascade. Jeff Chapin on drums, me on the rest.
