alida kinnie starr was born and raised in calgary, alberta, home of the goddamn calgary stampede. daughter of mohawk/euro criminal defense lawyer michael starr and irish/british guidance counsellor donna starr, kinnie is the middle sibling and only girl; sandwiched between two brothers and forced to play goal in way too many hockey and soccer games. sneaking into cars at night, driving prairie highways underage without a lisence, listening to heavy metal, new order and rap music (run dmc, zeppelin, sabbath, metallica, motorhead, salt 'n pepa, afikka bambaata, and ll cool j to name a few), a.k.s. found solace in music with attitude.
many years later and relocated in vancouver, a.k.s. has released three self-written, self-produced --- w co-production partner john raham @ ogre studios --- albums (starting in 1996 w her debut album, "tidy"), signed and left mercury/island/defjam (1997 - 2000), been nominated for a juno (best new artist 2003), sang and catwalked for cirque du soleil's erotic cabaret "zumanity" in las vegas (2004), performed at the national aboriginal achievement awards (2005), and is about to release her fourth album through canada's maple music (universal canada) in both canada and the good ole' USA. starr has a registered body of work 80 songs+ and recently signed a publishing deal (last gang/ole publishing) in hopes of taking her craft to more film and TV, and especially to other artists. a.k.s. vows to continue writing and producing albums which meld her love of hiphop/r&b/folk/rock until she feels complete. big love is what motivates her.
