Derek “ Manik “ Edenshaw BiographyDerek Edenshaw belongs to the Raven clan of Haida Gwaii. In Vancouver he is known as “ Manik 1derful “ of the Freshcoast collective and popular Vancouver indie hip hop group “ Sunday Skool Dropoutz.He is set to release his emergance from the underground which will be titled INDIGEBONICS . This will be done through local upstart record label D.N.T. Entertainment which is another branch of the already strong Freshcoast and Stressed Street collectivesHis performance career started as a very young child as a member of the Rediscovery Haida dancers. Moving to the city at a young age forced a metamorphosis of his creative energy. It seemed only natural that the innate beat of the native drums translated into hip-hop music for his young ears. That’s where the passion began.Always witty Manik picked up the art of freestyle rap with childhood friends at the age of 13 years old. This was complemented in 2005 when Manik won the Dreameyes Ent. Vancouver Freestyle Rap Olympic ‘s competition . A show will consist of traditional hip-hop, freestyling and spoken word poetry. Manik was able to perform along side the nations top poets as the only hip hop emcee invited to the 2005 Canadian Spoken word Festival. He has also recorded hundreds of songs and appeared in various medias nationwide. He has traveled from California to Toronto and wishes to fulfill his invites to travel abroad.He has utilized his writing and cultural experiences to contribute to the ever growing “ contemporary “ native arts scene. There’s a ever growing for Derek’s skills in the world of film , t.v. and theatre. This is apparent in his current involvement in the major music- theatre production “ Ninstints ” which is hopefully debuting in 2007. He is proud of these accomplishments and loves the recognition he has received. Manik is confident of what he represents, which is a pillar and one of the pioneers of the increasingly popular native hip hop movement. While Canadian hip-hop grasps for an identity, Manik grantees authenticity. After many limited releases Manik is gearing up for his professional industry debut to be entitled “Commercial Drive” led by a single of the same name celebrating the popular East Vancouver neighborhood. Manik is now prepared to take his show international. With the movement he helped create backing him up this seems the inevitable. ..
