Cool Clocks at WishafriendBriefly, My name is Sean Meaney,I was born in Finglas, Dublin in 1950 and was raised on the cut and trust of the now famous sixties and seventies Rock scene there. I helped pioneer the radical change in the Radio world in Ireland, in the late seventies, which, at the time only had one national station RTE Radio.
I worked with the notorious Captain Cook on Radio Dublin, where I presented an two hour show every evening between six and eight for nearly two years, my radio name was John Michael.
Members of U2 used to ring me on the show, from their local telephone box, and request their own songs to be played.
Bono lived two streets away from me in Finglas. Amongst many others, I interviewed Phil Lynott, Bob Geldof, Mark Knopler from Dire Straits.
Radio Dublin was majorally responsible for the changing of Government legislation to licence local radio.
I moved on to manage bands in Dublin, Eye to Eye, Up Front, being the two main ones.
Up Front came dangerously close to being signed after coming second in an RTE TV competition to find the best young band in 1987.
I emigrated to London in 1988 after my marraige broke up and had to begin again.
I first took on a band called Chalk Garden but after a year or so moved on to manage 'The Mustard Seeds' who quickly became known as 'The best unsigned band in London'.
I booked bands into 'The Red Lion' in Brentford at the rate of sometimes nearly 21 bands a week and had my own Sunday night gigs at the now famous Marquee Club in Charing Cross Road.
I started my own magazine called 'Real Music' and out of that I got a job with the Irish World newspaper as music editor.
I managed to interview lots of famous people for the paper, notably, Michael Flatley, Jean Butler, U2, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Philomena Lynott, Ralph McTell, Deacon Blue, Christie Hennessey, Mary and Frances Black, The Saw Doctors, Kirsty McColl and Shane McGowan.
I conceived produced and presented to first two 'Irish World Awards' which are still going strong today.
I began putting yearly gigs on to celebrate the memory of Phil Lynott and worked with Limehouse Lizzy and Dizzy Lizzy among lots of other tribute bands including 'The Bohemians' an excellent Queen tribute act. I forged a special friendship with Philomena Lynott which has stood the test of time and today she remains one of my favourite friends.
I worked at various venues booking bands, where I introduced lots of new bands and artists. The Kays got to play for me, they later became Kula Shaker. I also worked with several bands on the London Irish scene, 'The Mega Micks' 'Dun The Veil' and 'The Paddy Fields' and people like Johnny Fean, Eric Bell, Brush Shiels and comedian Brendan O'Carroll
In 1996 I was priveledged to work with Paul Bell and Brendan Wade collectively known as 'The Wild Swans' and we managed the almost impossible by having a massive number one hit in Ireland with 'Dancing at the Crossroads' a song specially written for the Wexford Hurling team. They took the title that year and helped us create Irish Music History.
We released the song without a recoed label and became the first band to have a number 1 on cassette tape only, the first Wexford band to acheive number 1 and the only Irish band ever to knock 'The Spice Girls' off the number 1 slot.
I had a book published in the same year and, coincentally, it was about the man who presented the MacCarthy Cup to the GAA. Titled 'Irelands Forgotten Son - The Liam MacCarthy Story'.
I had found out that he lay in an unmarked grave in Dulwich and the book was about his background and how we eventually got the GAA to erect a lasting memorial to him at his grave.
I narrated and produced a docu style CD about the life of Phil Lynott, titled 'I am just a Cowboy', it got some very good reviews especially in New York and Los Angeles. It featured songs performed by Dizzy Lizzy who were described as better than the current line up of Lizzy.
I have been involved in lots of things musical since but the high point of my career was in August 2005 when I, and two others, put a very special gig together for Phil Lynott at The Point in Dublin. It was to celebrate the unveiling of his Statue in Grafton Street and was titled 'The Boy Is Back In Town'
I got Gary Moore and Brian Downey to agree to do the gig and eventually Gary and Brain got all of Thin Lizzy back together to play for the first time, in that format, in nearly 20 years.
It was a special weekend for me, one I will cherish forever. Also in the line up were 'Wheatus' 'Johnny Fean' 'Brush Shiels' 'Neil Murray' and a new artist 'Alaska Lyle' whom I signed and released her album 'Angels in Disguise'on my own label in Ireland 'Cunas Music'
The DVD of the concert is available now and is titled 'One Night In Dublin' Gary Moore and friends with a tribute to Phil Lynott.
There is also another excellent DVD now available called 'Outlawed' which is a passionate documentary about Phil and was produced around the unveiling of the statue. I was again priveledged to appear on it specially because it contains the last interview given by Goerge Best before he died. I now run my own bar in Lewisham, called 'Temple Bar' after the famous one in Dublin. check it out on my space page of friends. On 1st August 2008 I will be releasing my new book 'Our name is on the cup' the story of Liam MacCarthy and Sam Maguire. It will be available from the usual outlets plus E-bay and amazon.co.uk
