ALPINE FAULT is a melodic/progressive metal band from Auckland, New Zealand. Early influences include some of the giants of thrash and metal: Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Iron Maiden and Sepultura. Later, however, the attention of the band’s songwriters, Ant Royle and Derek Wu was turned to Europe by such groups as Opeth, In Flames, Dark Tranquility and Children of Bodom. Combine all of this with a background in classical training and ALPINE FAULT’s sound could almost be predictable…
But it’s not.
As East meets West, melodic arpeggios meet powerful riffs and eerie, atmospheric violins to create the harmonic symphonium of sound that has become the trademark of ALPINE FAULT. Forming in early 2005, the band have since gained the respect of rock and metal fans throughout the Auckland area with regular gigs at venues such as Auckland University bar Shadows, The King's Arms, and K'rds Hysteria and Studio.
The band have also appeared on music channel Alt TV playing in the grand final of it's "Top of the Rocks" competition (2006) with fellow Aucklanders The Rabble, City Newton Bombers, The Have and BattleCircus. Currently a clip from their track "Sleep" is being used as the backing track for C4 Television's popular metal show The Steel Mill.
In November 2005, ALPINE FAULT released their debut EP Severance: an exploratory compilation of musically diverse tracks reflecting their journey towards their definitive musical direction. The soon to be released Under a Dying Sky EP featuring the title track and songs such as Sleep and Late Harvest is an indication of where we can expect to see their music taking us in the future.
ALPINE FAULT would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have helped out with the band this year. Keith Morgan and Paul Rogers for some fantastic photography, Mike and Karl from Upraw for their ever-appreciated support and road crew expertise. Joanna, Handri, Lara and Tracey (our regular groupy chicks), all those at AltTV with special thanks to Adam and Coralie Usmani for terrific work on Top of the Rocks, to the Rock Factory's Michelle and Mark for continuing to support some great NZ bands. Others include Nate and the crew from Atwaters Musicworks, Simon from Ishtar, George at the Killing Rooms, oh and that chick that we always see at our gigs but runs away whenever we go to say hi...you know who you are... the list goes on.
A special thanks to Helmut from Germany who has been waving our flag in Europe and helped us to connect to many fantastic string metal bands from all over the region. Your support and advice is always appreciated. We hope to see you soon.
