About Me

nearly SOLD OUT!
Lyriel was formed in autumn of 2003, after some of the members had been in a band called "Sorrowsend". One member was Oliver Thierjung (guitar), who decided to found a side project with his wife Jessica. Also two other Sorrowsend-members joined the new project: Sven Engelmann (bass) and Daniel de Beer (drums). They chose to add some other instruments, consequently Martin Ahman (keyboard), Linda Laukamp (cello) and Claudia Schäfer (violin) joined the band and Lyriel was born.
The music can be defined as "dark romantic celtic rock" and combines rock with medieval, classic and folk-elements. On top of this Jessica's strong but gentle voice brings a melodic vibe into the music.
The band supported artists such as Xandria , Schandmaul , Corvus Corax , Saltatio Mortis , Oomph , Schelmish and "Mannfred Mann's Earth Band". Lyriel's first album "Prisonworld" was released on January 17, 2005 by their label Black Bards Entertainment . Whats very individual about the album is, that it contains a song sung in "Sindarin", the language of the elves in "Lord Of The Rings". A live video of the song called "Lind e-huil" can be watched below. The video is part of the live-dvd "Live auf Burg Greifenstein", recorded at the "Celtic Rock Open Air" on Greifenstein-castle on July 15, 2005.
Soon after "Prisonworld" was released they supported Elis and Visions of Atlantis on the "Dark Clouds In A Perfect Sky"-tour, from 2nd to 10th of April 2005, with the new violinist Joon Laukamp, brother of Linda Laukamp, who had joined the band in March 2005 since Claudia Schäfer had left the band.
Another tour, the "Romantic Darkness Tour" with Regicide and Xandria , followed in February 2006.
After this tour Lyriel started working on their next album and also formed the side project "Lyriel-unplugged", without Martin Ahman (keys) and Daniel de Beer (drums), but with Marcus "Fidi" Fidorra on percussion.
The second album "Autumntales" was released on September 29, 2006. This page features one song of that album, entitled "The Promised Land". The album also contains guest vocals by Sabine Dünser (Elis), who died on July 8, 2006 at the age of 29. Lyriel added a dedicated version of the song "My Favourite Dream", which only features Sabine's vocals and classical instruments.
Autumntales has already received some excellent reviews by many scene-magazines.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members:

Jessica - Vocals
“Music has always played a big role in my life. When I was 17 I met Olli who is now my husband. I was a guest vocalist in his band Sorrowsend. In first place Lyriel was supposed to be a solo-project, but then the musicians of Sorrowsend joined, and also a violin, cello and keyboard.”

Olli - Guitar
“I started singing when I was 6 and learned playing several instruments later. I founded Sorrowsend with Sven when I was 16. Then came Lyriel, Jessi was supposed to be the central point from the beginning. When we got so much positive feedback for Lyriel I started seeing it as my main project.”

Dani - Drums
“I played drums in my grandpa’s “band” at fairs and carnival-parties when I was 8 to 12. Later I was in a garage-punk band with some friends. When I was 15 Sven came up with Olli and we decided to found a band. I currently live in Cologne, I like good music, good parties and a nice cold beer.”

Sven - Bass
“It all began about 11 years ago with a guitar. Then I noticed there were just 2 strings too much. So I got my first bass when I was 16, took lessons and got my first band experiences. Some time later Dani, Olli and I founded Sorrowsend that turned into Lyriel in autumn of 2003.”

Martin - Keys
“My first intrument was the flute. When it became to boring I started playing keyboard. When I was 12 I joined my first band “Insanity”. Later i produced trance&techno music, which I still make with my other band 4nation. I came to Lyriel by accident when they were searching for a stand-in keyboarder.”

Linda - Cello
“Since my parents are both musicians it was natural that i started a classical training at the age of 7. I chose the cello. Later some friends brought me to heavy metal and I wanted to use my skills in that genre as well. After some band-projects with friends failed I found out about the project “Lyriel”. And here I am.”

Joon - Violin
“I’m with Lyriel since March of 2005. I got that chance through my sister Linda. Since we are siblings our musical carreers are pretty much alike. I started classical violin training when I was 7, kept doing it till I was 15 and then quit until I started playing again with Lyriel.”
