New Way Home are a five piece melodic metal outfit from Auckland, New Zealand. Their dues have been paid in some of Aucklands premier metal/hardcore acts since the mid to late nineties, most notably Day One. They formed officially in 2001 from the ashes of an alien space craft that crashed into the harbour bridge. Upon combining with our atmosphere the 5 members adopted ruggedly handsome human forms in order to blend in and begin rehearsing. Their riffs have been described as like molten lava or when you sometimes get sore guts because you have hepatitis A. When I asked the band how to describe their sound I was punched in the face and told to "cook some eggs" so I had to make my own observations
I think their style is a mixture of heavy and melodic metal, with elements of post hardcore and progressive rock, however you wouldn't know it to look at them. The singer looks like David Schwimmer and their 75 year old drummer can crack open walnuts with his ass.
New Way Home has built a solid fan base through the quality of their music and staying true to their own direction. Their self funded and eagerly awaited EP "Anomaly" was released in 2005. It consists of six of their earliest works and was recieved very well through New Zealand/Australian distribution and touring. It has sold well but no money has yet been seen by anyone. The story from the label being that lions ate the money while in Africa. When asked about the money situation, one of the guitarists said that real bands don't need to eat. He then punched me in the face and took my wallet and undies. My undies were later discovered in his studio and $10,000 had been run up on my visa at "Boon Chu" Thai restaurant.
With their eyes burning holes in the future, new material is currently in the demo process. A full length record self produced and engineered "in band" will be due late 2008. "Turtle Power" will be the working title. The songs are shaping up nicely with more groove, polish and *gasp* maturity!! :-).
Some of the bands these gentlemen have supported/had sex with include: Killswitch Engage, Vision of Disorder, One King Down, Parkway Drive, Most Precious Blood, Sick Of It All, Brutal Truth and Mindsnare..
If you're a fan of heavy, layered, aggressive and melodic music go check the e.p out or catch their new material at the next show. Sincerely yours,
George.W. Bush
Oh and take a look at this well meaning review from their mate Paul Martin at the rock, it is "gnarley" "fat" and "tight"
"Auckland based New Way Home have come up with a real winner here. I've been hanging out for this for since I first heard their track 205 which I totally rate. Well, it turns out there was more where that came from. They have taken their time to get this out; three years in fact and they've bloody well got it spot on with this release. With Anomaly they are sure to set new standards for NZ hard music and they offer us six tracks of history in the making for the NZ metal scene. I like the lyrics and Chris Humphreys' guitar is gnarley, fat and tight. Some serious metal drumming going on here too. A fit job done by all. The staggering, swaying intricacies of the title track, Anomaly, and the controlled psycho of Comfort, as well as the freakin brilliant 205 show these guys have taken time, effort and pride putting this all together. A damn fine moment for them and a podium finish among this year's local releases."
