"The arts work together as a whole. Visual art, dance, music, comedy, music production, theater, radio and film all compliment each other and merge together in various aspects. Women in these industries need a way to network together, work together, ask for and give support and advice and help build each others careers. Indie means much more than independent songwriters. Indie means Independence to take your career where you want it to go. It is in this independence that a community of professional women need to circle around each other and give and offer support and work together on projects." ~ Vicki Blankenship
2008 is the year of the face lift for Indiegrrl now known as Indiegrrl Women in the Arts. Established as Indiegrrl in 1998 by songwriter Holly “Figueroa” O’Reilly as a networking forum for female independent songwriters, the revamping of the organization began in October 2005 when Holly passed the reigns to songwriter Vicki Blankenship. The networking group soon became a membership organization in 2006 under the umbrella of the Indie Music For Life, Inc. non profit. Indie Music For Life, Inc. is a non profit that works to showcase independent artists and raise money for cancer research and educational awareness programs on the benefits of music as therapy to cancer patients and other cancer patient advocacy programs. Another division of the non profit is Indie Laughs For Life that works to raise money showcasing comedians with awareness programs on the benefits of laughter to cancer patients and other advocacy programs. The Indiegrrl name change took place in late 2007 to incorporate the new vision for the organization to include all women in the arts. Now known as Indiegrrl Women in the Arts, this organization puts a focus on showcasing female artists not only in music but comedy, spoken word, and more and contributes to the cancer awareness programs of the main non profit.
If you are a woman involved in the arts in any aspect, now more than ever is the time to get involved with Indiegrrl Women in the Arts. Yearly membership fee is $30 and will give you networking opportunities with other women in the arts through the organization message board and yahoo group and you can become a part of the new development and growth of the organization that will include more showcasing opportunities with larger festival type events being planned in several states in the future. The beginning of these events is set for October 3 to 6 at Indiegrrl Fest Georgia in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Georgia. Locations are being scouted out now for other Indiegrrl Fest opportunities.
Another EXCITING announcement is the new INDIEGRRL RADIO CHANNEL which is in its beginning phases of production and will be a channel devoted to playing Indiegrrl members in music, comedy, spoken word, and more 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The channel will stream live across the internet and will also do features and interviews of various members of the organization each month. An online Ezine is also being developed that will discuss news in music, comedy, art, and more.
BREAKING MORE HISTORICAL GROUND the Indiegrrl Women in the Arts organization is producing its first conference in 2008 geared toward not only entrepreneurial development to its members and those that attend but showcasing 2 days of women performers in music, comedy, and spoken word on the live performance showcase stages. The Indiegrrl Women in the Arts Conference on August 21 to 24 will take place in Spencer, VA at the historical landmark The Spencer Penn Center located at 475 Spencer Penn Rd in Spencer Virginia at the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Keynote speakers at the conference banquet on Thursday night include Bonnie Bramlett and Molly Neuman. Visit our website at www.indiegrrl.com for more information and to stay tuned for upcoming events and showcases.
