Music - the Roots of Myspace

About Me

I list a few of the free concerts, movies, and other free events in Brisbane. I don't include music in genres that I don't follow regularly such as dance and electronica - not that I don't love those styles of music, just that I can't keep up with everything. For more comprehensive and up to date gig guides, see the list of publications and websites below.
I've enjoyed chatting at Brisbane concerts to Kate Miller-Heidke, Robin Waters (The Boat People), Dan Acfield, and others, and I've enjoyed working with Dan Acfield as part of his street team since early 2007, both for his solo and band projects. It's apt to compare Brisbane's Hannah & Dan Acfield to the New Zealand born Finn Brothers, or perhaps The Waifs from that other great Australian musical city, Perth. The Acfields are great singer/songwriters.
Since the 1980s I've also done lighting and sound production for special events at the 3rd oldest church in Brisbane, St Mary's South Brisbane, a beautiful old Italian building with a diverse musical community. I've had the chance to work with musicians, producers, and ensemble directors including Antonia Breen, Wendy Brown, Paul Holley, Simon Monsour, Josephine Brown, Joan Mooney, and Tom (Dean) Hamilton. Staging events at St Mary's can be a bit like the recent Channel 10 series, Live At The Chapel , with candles and stage lighting, or if using candles entirely, like events at the multi-faith community of Taize .

My Interests

Advertising free Brisbane gigs, writing gig reviews, doing stage lighting & sound for special events at my local church, song writing, reading and writing poetry, watching movies, chatting to friends & neighbours, and gardening.

Movies:

Free movie screenings in Brisbane can be found by visiting ourbrisbane.com Also worth trying is the Queensland State Library , and the Queensland Museum . Both have interesting short (documentary) films on from time to time.

Movies I like include The Africa Queen, American Beauty, Apocalypse Now, Bad Santa, Black Robe, Erin Brokovich, Escape from New York (fav 80s flick with Kurt Russell), Hi Fidelity, Kill Bill (Vols1+2 but moreso Vol 2), Lord Of The Rings, Good Will Hunting, Platoon, Poseiden Adventure (Original 1972 version Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine), Million Dollar Baby (I'm a bit of a Clint Eastwood Fan), Ned Kelly (2003 with Heath Ledger) The Piano, Predator, Pulp Fiction, Shrek 1+2.. Walk The Line (Biography of Johnny Cash)..

Television:

As you can probably guess, I don't subscribe to pay TV. I like good investigative journalism, historical documentaries, movies, cricket, rugby league, world cup soccer, catching an old movie, The Rock N. Roll Cooking Show on Briz31 TV... comedies, including Get Smart.

Books:

Building my collection of poetry books and poetry anthologies.. most my novels are from my uni days.. Australian literature, and Spanish and Latin American literature. I tend not to read long novels cause I'm usually on the floor in front of the TV in my spare time working out for my back condition, so not long periods being sedintary reading a 500 page novel... I miss this tho. I love the website Poetry Critical , an online poetry workshop. Reminds me of uni tutorial days, discussing literature in a group, altho this is global and electronic.

Heroes:

People who are good at their job and stick at it despite not getting great monetary rewards... I know musicians and university lecturers who fit into that category.
