Improve the Groove

About Me

Having benefitted from the help and encouragement of countless heavy hitters on the East Coast from Boston, to New York, to Baltimore and D.C., Darius continues working to develop and refine his own voice on the instrument and, above all, to always "improve the groove".Through good fortune, Darius has had the privilege to have worked regularly and recorded with several east coast groups. These include a 2 year engagement with the Allen Houser Quintet at Bertha’s in Fell’s Point, a 3 year run in the piano chair rotation with the latin-jazz group Rumba Club, and 7 years and two recordings as the regular pianist with a creative small jazz ensemble, the Al Maniscalco Quartet. You can hear his performance and a composition on the debut album of Baltimore hard-bop quintet the Todd Butler Group, and also as a composer and swinging hard on all three albums from D.C.’s Michael Thomas Quintet.Since Fall of 2003, Darius Scott and his Resolution Trio has been performing on Thursdays or Friday nights at Sascha’s 527 in Baltimore. Please check the schedule, stop in and support the group. With his group and others, Darius has performed at various local and National venues such as The Kennedy Center, The Millenium Stage, Lisner Auditorium, Twins Jazz and Lounge, Blues Alley, The old One Step Down, HR-57 and the historic Bohemian Caverns in D.C., The King of France Tavern in Annapolis, The New Haven Lounge in Baltimore, Pearl’s and Pier 23 in San Francisco, S.O.B.’s and the Bahai Center in New York City, The Balcony in Pittsburgh, Dazzle in Denver Colorado, and Churchill Grounds in Atlanta.Darius has also made several appearances behind the piano in the HBO series "The Wire" and in late 1998 played in several scenes with Brenda Russell in Barry Levinson’s film "Liberty Heights".

That's the short list that doesn't include everyone else who has helped me and knows it.
Sounds Like: "The Messenger" Cadence Magazine - April 2001 (pages 112-113) by Greg Buium:"...pianist Darius Scott knows what each piece needs. On "Tense Moments", for instance, he draws lines out of McCoy Tyner’s bag, but for the most part he’s playing on his own terms. The rhythm section’s vigorous, intelligent support is especially noticeable on "The Messenger," where Scott and Williams lock into a compelling conversation behind the soloists..."
