INGRID JAMES - Jazz singer/teacher
Ingrid James, an award-winning jazz vocalist from Brisbane, Australia has had a diverse musical career ranging from soloist with the Queensland Orchestra to small jazz ensembles and big bands. For many years, she worked in Television Production for ABC-TV, Queensland and completed post-graduate studies in Film & TV with The Australian Film Television and Radio School, Sydney, as well as maintaining her passion for music. Her musical interests in Television extended to her co-producing award-winning original music scores for documentaries as well as directing music clips for other artists.
She made a choice to leave her career in Television, primarily to start a young family. However, it was actually her 2 daughters who inspired her to get back into singing again and studying music, which then lead to her winning two Music Industry SUNNIE Awards for Best Jazz Album in Queensland.
She has recorded an originals contemporary jazz CD with her musical colleague Louise Denson (pianist & head of Jazz Department, Queensland Conservatorium, Australia) and they won a Q Music Pinnacles Jazz Award for Best Original Song in Queensland, Australia recently. "Portrait" is distributed nationally by Newmarket Music and available in retail shops and can be ordered through www.newmarketmusic.com.au. Her previous album "Essence", also distributed through Newmarket Music is also available through Cd Baby.
Ingrid has been described by Tony Backhouse, Sydney, "as having a tone of honey [with] an engaging warmth to her delivery like a close friend smiling at you" . While John Shand from Sydney Morning Herald has described Ingrid as a "fearless and gifted jazz singer".
In 2002, she completed post-graduate studies with the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Vocal Pedagogy (Jazz Voice) and now enjoys teaching and performing full time locally, at interstate festivals and in London, France and LA, where she also conducts workshops & masterclasses.
Ingrid has been running a Jazz Singers' Jam Night for nearly 8 years (started in August 2001) at the Brisbane Jazz Club and co-ordinating workshops for visiting artists from overseas.
Her latest duo CD with John Reeves "Circumflex" was recorded in September 2008 and distributed nationally in Australia by Newmarket Music in 2009.
Her own journey to improve and grow as a musician and singer is ever evolving.
