Zé Eduardo’s creation, “a JAZZAR é que a gente se entende” (Jazzing is how we understand each other), is a show that reflects Zé Eduardo work since 2002. Furthermore than pure entertainment for all - a refinement of his concept in reinventing a jazz language filled with musical themes from a collective imagination.
Just as the name suggests, the premise of this musical genesis is a series of “a JAZZAR” albums that find their most recent and third chapter with the release of “a JAZZAR nos cartoons” (2008). This disc is presented in a very specific way in that the themes are conjured from animated characters such as the “Maya Bee”, “Noddy”, “Heidi” and “Dartanion and the Three Musketeers.” And above all a steady stream of good-humor permeates throughout.
To rewind a bit, the first chapter from this epic work was birthed in 2002 with the edition of “a JAZZAR no cinema português” (Jazzing in the Portuguese Cinema). The album addresses the most distinguished films from all eras of Portuguese film and integrates variations of their most famous musical themes. Starting with “Se Eu Fosse um Dia o Teu Olhar,” by Pedro Abrunhosa; to “Cantiga da Rua,” immortalized by Milú; to “Balada da Rita”, by Sérgio Goinho; and of course “Verdes Anos”, by Carlos Paredes.
The album was a success overnight and won over the public and critics alike. It was voted as the “disc of the year” by the magazine All Jazz and by the site Jazz Portugal. Responsible for its less friendly review was the critic José Duarte who said it was “the big surprise of the year” and “an operation of alchemy” that contains “excellent moments of jazz.”
Two years later, a new album was edited and this time it was an homage to the work of José Alfonso, one of the most important figures in Portuguese music. “a JAZZAR no zeca” includes such outstanding themes as “Grândola Vila Morena”, “O Que Faz Falta”, “Traz Outro Amigo Também.” It was no surprise that this album repeated the success of the earlier disc. But the real thanks goes to the original musical work and what it inspired in a different light – a work that is a fundamental element of the cultural heritage of Portugal. An international critic classified it as “an exceptional disc” (All About Jazz); “highly recommended” (Jazz Review.com); and, “essential” (Tomajazz).
Now, with “a JAZZAR nos cartoons,” Zé Eduardo’s Unit continues their road of exploration toward distant landscapes of sound, opening new ways for the evolution of jazz and exploring their own capacity for free communication, no matter what the genre of music.

O espectáculo “A Jazzar É Que a Gente Se Entende” reflecte o trabalho que o Zé Eduardo Unit tem desenvolvido desde 2002, e que consiste na “reinvenção” em linguagem jazz de temas musicais que fazem parte do imaginário colectivo.
Como o nome indica, a base do espectáculo é a série de álbuns “A Jazzar”, que teve o seu terceiro capítulo já em 2008, com a edição de “A Jazzar nos Cartoons”. Trata-se de um disco em que o trio apresenta a sua versão muito particular, e sempre bem-humorada, de temas de séries de desenhos animados, como “A Abelha Maia”, “Noddy”, “Heidi” e “Dartacão e os Três Moscãoteiros”.
O primeiro capítulo deste trabalho de “reciclagem” ocorreu em 2002, com a edição de “A Jazzar no Cinema Português”, um disco integrado por versões de temas que fizeram parte de filmes portugueses de todas as épocas, desde “Se Eu Fosse Um Dia o Teu Olhar”, de Pedro Abrunhosa, a “Cantiga da Rua”, imortalizado por Milú, passando por “Balada da Rita”, de Sérgio Godinho, ou “Verdes Anos”, de Carlos Paredes.
O álbum tornou-se de imediato um sucesso, tanto junto do público como da crítica. Eleito como “disco do ano” pela revista “All Jazz” e pelo site Jazz Portugal, da responsabilidade do crítico José Duarte, foi descrito como “a grande surpresa do ano” (Expresso) e “uma operação de alquimia” (Público) que contém “excelentes momentos de jazz” (Jazz Hot).
Dois anos depois, foi editado um novo álbum, desta vez a revisitar a obra de um dos mais importantes nomes da música portuguesa, José Afonso. “A Jazzar no Zeca”, que inclui versões de temas tão marcantes como “Grândola Vila Morena”, “O Que Faz Falta” e “Traz Outro Amigo Também”, repetiu o sucesso do antecessor. Graças à forma inspirada como mostrou, sob uma luz diferente, uma obra que é parte fundamental do património cultural português, foi classificado pela crítica internacional como “um disco excepcional” (All About Jazz), “fervorosamente recomendado” (JazzReview.com) e “imprescindível” (Tomajazz).
Agora, com “A Jazzar nos Cartoons”, o Zé Eduardo Unit prossegue o seu caminho de exploração de territórios sonoros distantes, abrindo novas vias à evolução do jazz e à sua capacidade de comunicar livremente com todos os géneros e estilos musicais.
