About Me
Born in Tavira, a small beautiful sea-sided city of the portuguese coast, in 1982.His contact with music and creativity came from his parents, who saluted him with great rock bands from the 70s, such as Pink Floyd and Queen; and forced him to have recorder lessons at the age of 6.Later on was again forced by his parents to join the local marching band, Banda Musical de Tavira, where he got influential notions of clarinet and ensemble playing. At the age of 14 Desidério took the opportunity of playing a military-band-based arrangement of Wagner..s "Rienzi Overture", giving him certain feelings that can relate to euphoria and adrenaline, which finally made him decide to follow music with seriousness, despite his love for sports and specially handball.Musical life followed then. Desidério Lázaro studied clarinet in the Conservatories of Faro and Setúbal. In Setúbal Desidério studied with Paulo Gaspar, a renowed classical and jazz clarinet player of the country, a friend and mentor who gave him the human and musical steadiness that lead him to his recent and future achievements. His first and crucial contact with jazz came with John Coltrane..s "Blue train". Fascinated by his sound and musicality, decided that he would study jazz and saxophone in the future, after playing in a great symphony orchestra (Wagner..s music, of course). The dream of the orchestra never came and decided to enter the jazz world imediately. Nevertheless, while clarinet player, played hundreds of concerts around the country(with marching bands, chamber music ensembles, world music ensembles, the Youth Orchestra of Algarve and the Chamber Orchestra of Barreiro), was clarinet teacher of world music and improvisation workshops (in collaboration with Gregg Moore) and ,in the middle of that, was a rock vocalist and a horn player of a funk band.In 2000, Desidério joined the Bachelor in Musical Education, in Setúbal, a degree he didn..t finish yet. Two years later joined the Hot Club de Portugal, a renowed jazz school in Lisbon, where he studied clarinet, alt and tenor saxophone, again with Paulo Gaspar and later with Pedro Moreira.2004 was his year of change and decided to leave to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Holland, where he recently finished a Bachelor in Jazz Saxophone, studying with Ferdinand Povel and Jasper Blöm and Dick Oatts, among others.Nowadays, Desidério is in Portugal, composing, studying and relaxing before his next foreign move.
