About Me

Mark Haney has been attached to a double bass for almost 20 years, and there is no indication he'll be able to escape anytime soon.
During that time Mark has played a lot of orchestral music, played with many bands in a myriad of venues as well as numerous other productions ranging from mariachi to new music.
Hot Ardent Zeal was intended to be an improvisational, loop based solo project. For the most part this has worked out.
"Aim for the Roses" is the album that may well break Mark; spiritually, musically, financially and morally.
It tells the story of forgotten Canadian daredevil Ken Carter who, in 1976, announced his plan to jump one mile over the St. Lawrence Seaway in a rocket powered car.
Structurally, it is based on a musical representation of pi to 499 digits. This proves that Mark is, in fact, a giant nerd.
"Aim for the Roses" guest stars a number of Vancouver's finest actors and musicians, featuring Andrew Wheeler as Ken Carter.
Mark is hoping to have it out by the summer.
We'll see.

Sounds Like: This is my favorite description of the solo improvisations on this page:

"It's like the pulse in your ears late, late at night when you're curled up under a warm comforter. You know what it sounds like? It sounds like the pulse of the world if you were listening to it in a womb. You know, under water? That's what it sounds like." -Laurel Adam

The overwhelming consensus is that "Aim for the Roses" sounds like something that would be heard on CBC radio late at night in the late 70's or early 80's.

I can live with that.
