I'm originally from Santa Clara, CA. I grew up in Castle Rock, and Littleton, CO. I was terrified of the old B&W horror movies they used to show on TV. Lon Chaney as the Wolfman...(changing before my eyes!) Boris Karloff's Frankenstein Monster, Bela's Dracula. I got obsessed with those movies and characters and the make-up men behind them. Later with Planet of the Apes. Around 9 yrs old I started to try and duplicate these make-ups with baby powder and store bought plastic teeth, and this was in the middle of summer! Around the same time, a little movie called Star Wars came out....and it blew my mind away. Unbelieveable SPFX and incredible creatures. Quickly I learned that the creatures were made by Rick Baker, a new hero in my book. Dick Smith, an amazeing make-up artist was his mentor, it was his teaching that would show me the professional aspects of make-up. Growing up in Colorado didn't help with make-up, but it was advantageous to being a Boy Scout. Going backpacking, camping, rafting, horseback riding, and skiing, doesn't get much better then in the Rocky Mountains. I became an Eagle Scout as a result. I hung out in the theater dept in High School doing more make-up and tried my hand at acting and singing. In College, I studied all aspects of technical theater and visual art. After completing college, I returned to California to pursue my dream of make-up effects, and it's been a dream come true ever since!
