About Me

Let's see. I'm a lawyer and a mother of an 11 year old and 15 year old. I'm a writer and a Quaker. I'm a Spanish speaker and a proud card carrying member of the ACLU. And I'm not shy. Not really...I write a weekly column in Spanish on immigration issues which is published in over 20 different Latino papers. In fact, I just found out from the editor of the paper in Seattle that their sister papers in L.A. and Miami also publish my column. I wondered why I kept getting calls from Florida. I occassionally write for the Philadelphia Inquirer - slice of life stuff. It's fun and positive and good for my ego. I also love to write fiction. I've won a couple of short story contests which always makes a writer feel good, and I have one book finished and another 3/4's done but I'm at the fear of failure/fear of success point. Most of my law work revolves around immigration but I also do some estate planning and family stuff. My favorite cases, however, are pro bono and are referrals from the Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts - contract reviews mainly for new writers, musicians and filmmakers. You can find out a little bit more about me on my website: www.beverlyablack.com

My Interests

Writing, writing and writing. I also like to swim laps and walk the dog and go to museums and lounge around on beaches as long as no one else is there.

I'd like to meet:

I'd love to meet other writers and publishing folks not to mention singers, songwriters, guitar pickers and piano players. Anyone creative - photographers, architects, inventors. The whole mashpuucka (ok, I'm not Jewish so I don't know how to spell that. Sorry.)

Music:

I like it all, really! Right now I'm in love with Andrea Bocelli. Can't get enough of him. I also enjoy the Blues, Folk, Bluegrass, Andean folk, Gipsy Kings, West African rhthyms and basically anything with a beat! Oh, don't forget Pink!

Movies:

Anything with Philip Seymour Hoffman in it. Or DeNiro. Or Streep. The last two movies I saw were The Mongol and Sweeny Todd.

Television:

Don't watch very much. Wait! I watch the Colbert Report and the Daily Show and try to catch the comedy stand up specials.

Books:

Historical stuff. Isabel Allende is a big favorite, of course and early Phillpa Gregory. And anything by Jonathan Maberry, 2006 and 2007 Bram Stoker Award Winner. I also really love David Liss, Anita Shreve and Amy Tan.

Heroes:

Ghandi, Jesus, Buddha, and Thoreau
