About Me

From the prologue of TALES FROM THE FIRE ZONE by Jonathan Maberry (Bram Stoker Award-winning author of GHOST ROAD BLUES, DEAD MAN'S SONG and BAD MOON RISING).
**********************************************
When kings are born or die the heavens rain down fire and lions are seen in the streets; but how does creation acknowledge the death and rebirth of the soul of an ordinary man? On the night that he stopped being Jim Smith and became Indigo Heart no comets ignited the sky, the dawn did not tremble as he opened his eyes. Instead, as he slept, the universe sent him dreams of the Fire Zone.
He’d dreamed of it before in bits and pieces but that night he spent every sleeping moment in the Zone. The dreams were complex and even when he was aware that he was dreaming he didn’t understand all of it. It was like stepping through Alice’s looking glass without having read the book.
And yet…
When he woke he had only a few broken moments of memory, and the awake Jim Smith and the dreaming Jim Smith shared just a flicker of understanding. It was like primitive man and future man both looking at a spark floating on the air and sharing an understanding of fire.
When he’d awakened that morning he’d risen to the top of his dreams and broke the surface tension like a swimmer fighting against an undertow. Sweating, breathing hard he sat on the edge of the bed, hating the morning and remembering only pieces of the dream.
He’d rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, not yet realizing that his trembling fingers were painted with magic.

My Interests

TALES FROM THE FIRE ZONE will be presented as a series of dramatic reading podcasts. Read by the author and presented here for the very first time in serial-novel format, you'll be able to step out of the real world and into the gorgeous, swirling, multicolored madness that is the FIRE ZONE.

I'd like to meet:

TALES FROM THE FIRE ZONE is an experimental novel based on a play of the same name that I wrote way back in the early 1980s. It's a metaphysical fantasy novel in which a disenfranchised man –Indigo Heart-- tries to flee from the burned out remains of his life and winds up in a place in which reality is both subjective and malleable.

In the Fire Zone, Heart encounters the Invited (those persons who have elevated to next level of the human/soul experience), the Guppies (innocents swimming in the dangerous waters at the edge of reality), and the Shark (spiritual and sexual predators always hungry for new flesh).

In the Zone, Heart goes from one bizarre night club after another --Torquemada’s, the Cafe Vortex, Unlovely’s—searching for a new identity, someone new he can be now that his old life has become unlivable.

The Fire Zone has been waiting for him, drawing him there. In the Fire Zone the Music has been played so long, so well, and with such spiritual intensity that it’s become a living force and on each of the dance floors Heart will face a different life or death challenge.

The ghosts of Heart’s past will be resurrected to haunt him, including the lascivious ghost of his sexually abusive father. Why these ghosts have returned and how they’d become real is just one of the mysteries Heart will have to solve in order to rescue his own soul from the oblivion of suicidal despair.

But Heart is not alone. There are other powers at work in the Fire Zone. Strange creatures and beings, new friends and enigmatic strangers: the devious Bishop; the serenely powerful Mister Sin; the gorgeous and insightful Kamala Jane; the sinister Owen Minor the Wolverine; Centerlok the Shapeshifter; Jellicho the Candyman; the healer Doctor Velocity; Oswald Four, the master of the Music; the bartender Brutal John; and the immortal wanderer and storyteller known as the Traveler.

The story begins soon on MP3 podcast!

Xander’s cab is waiting. Step inside....settle back and hang on tight. It’s going to be a bumpy ride...and at the end of it is the FIRE ZONE!
