About Me

Hello ! Daniel Braum, speculative fiction author here. This needs to be updated, so for a more concise version of this check out www.danielbraum.com I created this myspace profile to serve as a nexus for my fiction, writings, and publishing projects. Welcome ! If I've sent an add request, hello ! I try to send a message with each request but sometimes I'm bad and just don't. I'm looking to reach out to readers, writers, and cool and creative souls to share my fiction with and to learn and take in cool ideas.I prefer the term "fiction" to all others, though my stories are as varied as evidenced by the range of publications that run them- Fantasy, Science Fiction, Horror, and often the overlap and lines between them. Stories have appeared in Cemetery Dance, Electric Velocipede, Full Unit Hook Up, Abyss and Apex and the Fortean Bureau. Two of the stories are published in their entirity online and for free. Check out The Yeti's Hand at The Fortean Bureau www.forteanbureau.com March 2004.Sumo21 is a genre bending tale of alernate realities and alternate Japanese History. It is also free and live at www.abyssandapex.com. Feel free to drop me a line or post a comment on my blog with your thoughts.I joined myspace in August 2005 as a way to spread the word about my fiction while I got my website up and going. Since then, I've met so many cool people I would have never had the opportunity to. The best thing is how I've been able to connect with not just new and different kinds of writers, but fellow lovers of "my-kind" of fiction , art , music, and eclectic pop-culture. My website is up now at www.danielbraum.com, but I am here to stay. I try to write a short weekly blog on what I've been reading or watching as a gateway into a spec-fic conversation. LAtely this has degenerated into a short summer movie rant. (and even more lately it is evident this blog experiment has failed, :) )Here is an excerpt from my favorite review... “The strength of Daniel Braum's writing is the strength that comes from patience, from a writer trusting his audience with a steady, slow pace that allows details to accumulate in the mind so that the story becomes consistently more vivid until it reaches a conclusion that is profound in its subtlety and restraint”. –Matthew Cheney Nov. 2004. From Sfsite.com review I have to go with the good ones when they come because trust me not everyone likes my stories. Maybe you will.
I edited my profile with Thomas’ Myspace Editor V3.6 !

My Interests

Literature. Speculative Fiction. Science Fiction. Fantasy. Magic Realism. Slipstream. Horror. Writing. Editing. Publishing. Reading. Movies. Film. Graphic Novels. Comics. Pulp fiction. Poetry. Travel. Yoga. Spirituality. The list merely begins here...

I'd like to meet:

Readers, writers, editors, and fans of speculative fiction, fiction, art, moives, media, and literature from around the world. Readers, if you've gone ahead an added me I thank you in advance for your interest in my fiction- this is a great way for a new writer to spread the word in a world where it always isn't easy. I appreciate a note from bands, writers, and artists etc. Though my number of friends is slowly rising, there is no "friend collecting" here. Though it is impossible to truly stay in touch with each friend, everyone here is connected by a wide range of interests, most of them having to do with a love of great storytelling and I welcome hearing from everyone and anyone. Wanderers, musicians, artists, spell-slingers, mystics, travelers, and everyone else are welcome too !

Music:

Bob Marley and the wailin' Wailers are always in Heavy Rotation, mon ! New for me in 2007- REGINA SPEKTOR- Begin to Hope is in Heavy rotation. New for me in 2006 Death Cab for Cutie and Cab Calloway. Some favorites from last year were new Kate Bush and The BeeKeeper. Trying to get into the new Sinnead O Connor-- whoa Rasta Men fighting Vampires. I've recently loaded my cds into I-tunes and had a chance to revisit my old collection. Though I've yet to download a song I love I-tunes as my collection was just too unwieldy. Here are some favorites new and old. THE BEATLES / DEPECHE MODE / THE CURE / KITARO / PRINCE (especially bootlegs and live stuff) / PETER GABRIEL ( Ovo is so amazing ) / DEAD CAN DANCE / TORI AMOS (anyone have a good bootleg of the Scarlet's Walk tour?) / Yes, I love live music and live music recordings / CSNY - they are so much more energized with the addition of "Y" / JONI MITCHELL / THE SMITHS and MORISSEY / (older) SARAH MCLAUGHLIN / MORLEY (not Marley, tho I love him too, check out www. morleymusic.org ) / MASSIVE ATTACK / PORTISHEAD / (I'll think of more soon)

Movies:

NOCHNOI DOZOR or NIGHTWATCH !!! Finally it is here in New York and lived up to the hoopla ! SERENITY ! ! ! Ah, thank you. Thank you Joss Whedan. What else? ... good old STAR WARS never lets me down. (the real one, as in the 1977 one) The LORD OF THE RINGS was a nice visual illustration despite certain things that irked me a bit. APOCOLYPSE NOW, to feel like a poet warrior. I guess this is unpopular but I own and love the directors cut. Akira Kurasawa, to feel like a Samurai warrior. Blade Runner. Harry Potter The Prisoner of Azkaban- Alonso Curan hats off man! Y Tu Mam Tambien has got to be up there while we are at it ( love his vision of Mexico) SPIRITED AWAY- because radish spirits rule. Batman Begins was well done, and satisfied the fan-boy in me. Pirates of the Carribean (Arrgggh!) cause who doesn't want to sail the blue seas. UNBREAKABLE, however remains the best comic book movie in my book, and the Motorcycle Diaries because I love to travel (to name just a few, but there are so, so many.)

Television:

Mostly sucks, but then there is Battlestart Galactica, and Firefly, and some assorted new Doctor Who, and my guilty pleasures Lost and the Sopranos...

Books:

Lets see. The Dark Tower Series- Steven King I bow down to you. Thank you. Thank you for an epic job so well done, so much fun, and so originally done. This series truly moved me. And then there is everything by Tim Powers- start with Last Call, or The Anubis Gates, or On Stranger Tides best pirate story ever! I have to mention Hemingway and Henry Miller. If you haven't read any Lucius Shepard try Handbook of an American Prayer, its not what the name would have you believe! Graham Joyce's stuff is just so amazing- looking for a great book? Then read Smoking Poppy. Looking for another? Try the Etched City bv KJ Bishop- mind blowingly excellent! Then there is Salinger. Oh and early Anne Rice. I loved the Sandman series, read it monthly with anticipation. Like fairy tales? Have you read Red as Blood by Tanith Lee. So much, much more. These are the ones that spring to mind at this moment.

Heroes:

Authors, KELLY LINK- the one and only fully operational Death Start ! GARNER DOZIOS...(undead camels ate my flesh, doo dah ! doo dah ! ) And...Stephen King, Lucius Shepard, and Tim Powers for thier mastercraftman ship and vision. I'm indebted to all my teachers, Tim Powers, Karen Joy Fowler, Patricia Wrede, Terry Bisson and Geoff Ryman for being great teachers, exceptional authors, and encouraging role models. I'm humbled by thier talent, kindness, and determination. But as for truly humbling? Hmmm. The every day man and woman living a pure life full of good deeds. Show me them anyday.
