Elan Mehler Quartet
The Elan Mehler Quartet are flying in from Brooklyn, New York, to celebrate the UK release of their album, Scheme for Thought, on 3 September on Gilles Peterson's new record label, Brownswood Recordings. This is a very special opportunity to catch one of the finest and most innovative of the new generation of US jazz bands and to find out for yourselves why Gilles has chosen Elan and co. to be amongst his first signings.
Elan Mehler is a pianist and composer whose music sits firmly in the tradition of the best vintage jazz and improvisation. With echoes of Bill Evans and the acoustic spirit of Keith Jarrett, Elan draws on a range of influences in jazz yet manages to honour and develop a sound, not just emulate one.
The quartet is unusual and brave in being without drums and comprising piano, Rhodes, sax and bass, which allows space for subtle contrapuntal interplay and interwoven layers of texture.

The Basement Jazz Sessions are a monthly series of live jazz and other music in the Brook's basement bar near Hammersmith, West London. They combine two magical ingredients:
top-class music, painstakingly selected to avoid the humdrum and old-hat, and
an intimate, relaxed atmosphere in a basement bar serving great food and drinks.
The sessions take place on the first Tuesday of every month, and all the information concerning forthcoming performances will be available on this page. WTF Music, the organisers of these sessions, would love to hear from you all about your opinions on the nights and who you would like to see playing in the future. The Basement Jazz Sessions is all about showcasing the finest innovative and fresh jazz around and creating a vibe that will bring the best out of the musicians and audience alike. So join the family and enjoy the show!
The full address of the venue is:
Brook's Bar, Brook Green Hotel, 170 Shepherds Bush Road, London W6 7PB.
Information concerning how to reach the venue can be found here .

Sounds Like: REAL jazz with REAL people:

spontaneous & brave, we've got a world to save;

mellow & moody, a thing of beauty;

anything but clean, like a sex machine;

funky & bluesy, picky & choosy;

all in good taste, not a note to waste;

full of soul, we're on a roll;

a meditation, a prayer, a groove oh so rare;

what's right, what's true: something old, something new.
